kingglide just off to bed. It’s late in the uk. But I will do this tomorrow after work.

Does the plastic cog just just pull off? Nothing holding it on? What does this breather do?

what am I looking for?

thanks for your help.

Will report back tommorow

it comes straight out-no magic.
No worries.
IMO you need to toss it anyway
Look at the bore inside take a pic if it's not smooth and show us.
The plastic breathers have a habit of picking up debris and it gets implaled in the plastic parts.
and starts
Then, in turn, it starts scraping away at the bore .

kingglide I pulled the plastic breather and here are the pics. Looked a little scored to me? I ran my finger inside the bore and you could feel the scoring but it wasn’t deep?

You found your missing aluminum bits.
That bore should be smooth as silk...like a piston cylinder bore.
The plastic breather has dug it all to pieces.
You can get away with a few mars and scratches, but I would say you need that sleeved.
That is a good example of what a bad idea that plastic breather is,/was.
It is beyond shot and should have been tossed years ago.
Sorry man...
Now at least you know.

This is a common problem with plastic breathers and yours is the worse I have ever seen.
They collect metal bits like I described earlier and continually spin the debris in the bore.
Yes, you want the metal one as you posted.
Albeit I am not sure how well it will work with the bore all tore up.
I think this is is a good time to pull the engine dwn and check everything.

IDK without a teardown,
But IF I had to bet I would place 1/2 my money on the breather and the other 1/2 on upper valve train area

valave stem oil seals were only replaced last year so fingers crossed the shop checked all the upper valve train area.

I have just just seen that Jims USA make a hand reamer to fit there oversized gear breather so no splitting the cases, what do you think?
