Default oil pump help please

Hey guys, hope your all well,

I need some help please.. bike in question is a 1996 dyna wide glide (fxdwg).

The bike started throwing me a low oil pressure light only when hot, so me and my dad have removed the oil pump, to find some scoring inside from the gears. Also lots of metal flake when the oil was drained, more so in the oil filter . im guessing this is a result of the scoring in the oil pump.?

So help i need is as follows:

1. Just some idea of why oil pump gears have scored the oil pump? Is it just wear / what part is it that wears causing this? Will the rest of the engine be ok?

2. Would you agree that i should replace the oil pump shaft also? The one that goes inside the nose cone underneath the cam?

3. Is there a way to remove the oil pump drive shaft without removing the engine? The gearbox is preventing it just sliding out..

4. The oil pump drive shaft is slotted through a bushing inside the nose cone, this does not look replaceable, would this be worn? not sure what material its made from?

If anyone has any experience changing this out or any helpful insight would be greatly appreciated, i don't have the money to put it in to a shop so i have to take my time and fix this myself ..

P.S finding a oil pump in the uk is proving difficult anyone help her also?

Thanks

Daz

To get the long shaft out you have to create more space by removing the xmsn or engine
Whichever you prefer.
Your plastic breather gear, in my opinion, should be tossed for a real one.
and it looks like most your pump is shot.
Are the metal chips steel or aluminum? (magnet)
Has the rocker boxes been off lately?

Not sure if this helps but you can remove the shaft with the engine in place on a '94 FXSTC (Softail Custom).
The shaft is held in place by a gear that rides on the pinion shaft.
That gear in held in place by a circlip.
Simply remove the circlip, slide the gear off, then you can remove the oil pump shaft.

If you can't find a Harley pump can you find an S&S pump??

thanks for the reply kingglide,

what is xmsn?

Last year I put it into a shop and it had new valve stem oil seals and some manual decompressors fitted?

Metal chips look ally but I haven’t tried a magnet on them.

I dont know anything thing about the breather gear or replacing it for a metal one? The one in there is original I believe.

hey texashill,

i have remover the circlip and the heat and the dam thing hits the gearbox with about 2 inches left to slide out. So deffo need to move engine or gearbox lol.

Harley don’t make the oil pump anymore so will deffo have to be aftermarket. Was hoping somebody here could recommend me one.

Pull the cam and inspect the inner bearing and lifters. Looks to me like something went through.

I agree, I think the metal came from someplace else and showed up in the oil pump. I don't think the pump is the cause of the metal bits. Need to do more investigating. Like Dr, Hess mentioned, a good starting point is cam bearing and lifters. YD

Is it possible the shop which did the valve stem oil seals and the manual de-compressors dropped something?

A few years back the bike also had a top end rebuild because i believe a circlip or something fell of one of the gudgen pins, after the rebuild the bike did very very little miles and then sat for the best part of 5 years until it came to me, and i too have done limited miles trying to get it back to full health..

First things first -determine the metal ferrous or not.
XMSN - is an abbreviation for transmission.
Once you know what metal it is, (AL or steel) you will be more ready to find the problem.
Did they put a bigger cam in at the shop?

spoke to my dad who said the metal was definitely aluminium. He put a magnet on it to test.

Big cam was installed about 20 years ago. The shop only did the valave stem oil seals and decompressors.
