carb issue?

Default carb issue?

Hey so I need some big help although it will be a long paragraph in hopes to fully explain the chain of events leading me where I'm at now. So a few days ago I attempted to "rebuild" my carb on my 97 sportster custom, the only thing during my rebuild that I adjusted was my float and fuel mixture screw. Before I rebuilt it I think the previous guy was running the bike rich because the carb was pretty black with what I assume it's soot. After i adjusted my float (Upwards) and I'm pretty sure i flooded it and gas came out the air filter i readjusted the float and it hasn't spilled gas out of the air filter. So I think they had both jets inside the bowl fully seated, so during my rebuild I did the same to both jets. I do have an aftermarket air filler and so I kept the fuel mixture screw about the same rich (I think) level it was. After hearing some popping noise from the air filter area this happened mostly while driving not so much while sitting on neutral. I thought I needed to open the fuel mixture screw a little more, so I did and it seemed to run better afterwards because the popping became less frequent while driving. So I was this "sign" as keep it coming, so I did eventually the bike bogged really bad and topped out at about 15mph for about 2 blocks then shut off and has struggled to even turn on and if it did it would shut off almost immediately even after I tried bringing the mixture screw back to factory setting. I'm new to bikes and very new to carbs and i know it's not the best idea for me to work on my bike since I'm obviously no mechanic but I don't wanna be those guys who don't know squat about their bikes or how to work on it. Please help I'm hoping this is something small and stupid I don't know any bikers and this is out of my wheel house thank you any help is appreciated thanks if you read it all sorry if I jumped around a lot

I am the ars hole here.> But, B4 you tore into whatever carb you have on there it would have been good if you
had rebuilt a few lawnmower carbs as a kid.
The float has a correct height to be set at.
The float has to be checked for either weight (foam float) or leaks )hollow float.
This is not good enough for horseshoes and hand grenades work.
Soot in the carb means nothing but perhaps reversion.
Get a proper schematic and instructions and follow it religiously.
Most can be found on the net.
Is it a CV carb? They are simple.

Google 'CV Performance'. Find their website. Watch the videos.

Setting the float level is not a 'by guess and by golly' operation. You need to make an angle gauge of the correct dimensions.

I'm big on not half-assing a job. If your carb is screwy...particularly if you're the victim of sub-standard work from the previous owner... do a full rebuild (easy) and take it back to stock configuration. Get it back on and see what's what.

@Kingglide549 ok I do agree with it would've been best with previous experience but what's done is done. I'm just hoping to learn at this point. It is a cv carb and would the problem be the float if after three overflow adjustment it ran until I opened up the mixture screw? By the way I did use a cheap make shift angle to about 16 degrees in attempts to do it somewhat acceptable. Thanks for the suggestions

@0maha are the two jets screws inside the bowl supposed to be adjusted or fully seated? During my initial "rebuild" I did put the carb on a make shift 16 degree angle to adjust the float. Thanks I appreciate the suggestions ill check it out layer today

The jets must be fully seated.
