I'll add another possibility to Dan's list, which baffled me for ages on another brand bike. A wire with a protective plastic boot had been pushed onto it's connector, but alongside it, not properly engaged with it. Looked fine and, believe it or not, worked fine - most of the time. Once correctly connected to each other everything was sweetness and light, and the occasional problem went away!
