Yes!, I did not do this and had a hell of a time getting the new lifters to pump up. Just warming the bike up in the garage was not enough. Took 4 miles of listening to them clack away till my new lifters finally pumped up. So anything you can do to prevent this is a big yes. YD

I do not think it would matter either way...I have been packing every oil pump I've installed full of white grease since the 70's...motorcycle or cage...never had a problem.

There's grease and then there's grease. White grease has a low melting point and will quickly flush out of the oil pump. Lithium wheel bearing grease, on the other hand....

For what it's worth, I've probably replaced as many cam bearings as any of you and more than most. I've never used anything besides 20W-50 engine oil and never had a problem. I only use a bit of grease on the outside of the bearing to press the bearing into the case, but only oil on the needles.

Thanks guys, looks like the consensus is 20w50 so thats what I'll use. I bought a blind hole puller and installer for the cam and bearing, any other special tools needed before I pop her open?

If you're removing the lifter blocks, you'll need a 1/4" 12 point socket and a universal joint.

as for the lifters....I use an old style hand pump oil can, with the long flexible filler spout..I have a couple of them..you need to pump oil into the lifter oil hole till there is Zero air coming out of the lifter..Do not forget this procedure..its important
