It already has an ev27 cam. And it does use quite a bit of oil, that's what got me looking for trouble in the first place.
as for 500lbs of chrome...I actually have removed the aftermarket lights and cheap chrome stuff that was added on. Other than the cheesy fuel cap lid, it looks stock. Id rather it run better than throw shiny bits at it

How you making out? You never stated the mileage and wether or not you did a leak down test. I know if my engine was consuming oil, a leak down would've been the first thing of order........

Mileage is right at 31k. Bike sat for a long time, the was ridden a bit before I got it. I didn't do a leak down test, mainly because I have really good cranking compression numbers...180 on both cylinders.
I need to pull the engine anyway, to repaint the flaking black mess. While it's out, going to do valve seals and all gaskets. Figure while it's out do a quick clean up hone, and new rings.

If you are thinking old school -a hone with a drill motor DONT DO IT !

I will suggest a real shop with plates and low drag rings around the 9 to 12 lb variety.

Why people continue to put 30 pounders in there is more then I can comprehend..

Not even a clean up with a ball hone?
shops that work on motorcycle engines around here are very hard find, and the only local machine shop I trust doesn't do motorcycle stuff anymore

Nope
Rings have progressed WAY beyond what a lawn mower engine uses, as an expression.
Dont be scared to send them to a shop that uses TORQ Plates.
Cylinders are not that expensive to ship.
Whilst you are at it, consider some head work, like at least a deck.
Virgin heads can have 0.050 and more removed.
Low friction rings will give you more power and less heat,
Bump the CR, squeeze the squish and you will have a very happy smile.

Any piston ring manufacturer. Just google them,
Or, go to a vendor that knows what they are doing , such as in Scott at Hillside, or Axtell.
They are more expensive but well worth it!
just think -
Every stroke having to push getting robbed of 30 or lbs of force and all the added heat
or about 9lbs of friction.
It is a no-brainer.
Choose the 9 to 12 lb variety
Those that will tell you it will lead to oil consumption are just NOT informed.
The 9lb or 30 lb drag is no match for the forces going on inside.
Remember- rings are gas operated it.
That is forced out by the compression and combustion.
In fact, most car engine nowadays uses them for fuel efficiencies.
Most HD people are slow to change.
Be informed.

what is considered normal oil consumption on a modern day (2012-2017) twink?
my wife has an 08. Oild stays fresh looking longer and barely burns a drop.
mine’s a 14 and I add 10-12oz every 800-1000mi and gets dark quick. Tho both bikes run really well. Very cool below 225 mostly at idle in summer and good on fuel and no smoke.

My Evo after thinking thoroughly about this will use about a 1/2 quart in 1500 miles.
And it is a pretty big little EVO.
The cast iron cylinders are more stable than aluminum.
