Petcock

Hi everyone. I have an 86 fxstc that is dripping fuel out of the petcock. Is this common? Does the petcock need to be replaced or is there a piece that can be serviced or replaced without replacing the whole part? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I suggest you replace it, they are readily available on Ebay and elsewhere. This is an example of one similar to your stock one: # 361226279592, but do look around. I have a Pingel, which costs a lot more but is a lovely thing - if that can be said of a gas tap!

IDK if yours has a vacuum hose hooked to it or not, but I recommend what GR Brown said above.
-Get a trouble-free one without a vacuum hose to it .
It is one less problem area and----if you ever run out of gas they can be a biotch cause ya need gas to start it and vacuum to open it
so,.... .you get neither!

My 1990 Glide didn't have a vacuum tap when new, I suspect they were introduced later on. However I do agree to avoid getting one, a plain simple 'normal' one will be just fine!

"Pingel IT"

Here's yet another vote for Pingel.
Another option is a Golan.
Either is kinda pricey but well worth it IMO.
Another plus is that they are much easier to operate with winter gloves on.

There is a rubber O ring in there. It dries out, gets brittle and shrinks. Don’t know the size...

That is the cause of your leak. Remove the two Phillips screws, take it apart. You will find it. YD

Ok thanks. All of you have been great help.

The diaphragm is probably old and the cause of your leak. I'd recommend the pingel but you won't go wrong with a golan as well

If the petcock is stock from 1986, it did not have the diaphragm/vacuum type shut off. My 1994 did not have one either. Not sure what year it started, but my guess would be it had to be after 1994. YD
