Thanks Bob, I'll give it a try. Mine appears to be flush with the outside of the case. Will try to post some pics later. Thanks.

Wish I would have seen this earlier. So I guess this piece of advice is for the next person. The gear c-clip snap rings that go on the shafts have a bevel on the two ends where they basically come to a point. Make sure the point is away from the gear or thrust washer it is next to. Not a huge deal but it sure makes them easier to get off if you have to do it again.

Hey guys, I finally got around to putting everything back together. Got the main drive gear bearings and seal changed. I installed the shift pawl seal, flush with the case, And went to install the pawl shaft, it slides into the hole easily but doesn't seem to go in far enough to put the washer and snap ring on. I'm 100% sure that it is going in all the way, I even tried very lightly tapping it and it just don't seem to go in far enough. Has anyone else had this problem or do I have the wrong part? Thanks guys

Did you replace the shifter shaft bushing in the transmission case?

There have been 2 lengths used, depending on the year.

Earlier transmissions used a shorter bushing, when the later model shift drum/pawl came out, a longer bushing was introduced.

You need to determine which bushing is compatible with the shift pawl you have.

I tried to find info on just that and could not. I spoke with John yesterday And he had told me that his current bushing is not flush all the way in with the inner case. Which he had mentioned was the approximate distance necessary to install the washer on the outside. I have never encountered this issue and advised him to try and get a hold of Mark@bakerdrivetrain. I sure he can steer him in the right direction... I would think the bushing would need to be flush but the question is why is the OEM shift pawl one ok and not the Baker shift pawl...

Here are some picture so you can see what I mean.
1 is the stock pawl
2 is the baker pawl
3 is the shift pawl bushing protrusion.

The shift pawl bushing is the original one.

I dont know if this is the case but Baker makes a variety of shift pawls because of the different size of bushing. Maybe you got the wrong one
