Default 84 Evo 1340 fxr oil filter removal

Help! I am trying to get my Evo fxrt oil filter off at the back of the bike and am having a HELL of a time. It's so stuck it has me wondering if it's reverse thread.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me other than the screw driver method as a last resort. I'm already there.

I definitely didn't put it on this tight. It baffles me how this happens. I guess I need a bigger screwdriver. 🙄

Screwdriver on yer FXR??? ... that is one we use Big *** Slip joint pliers on... hasn't failed yet.. But... we just used the same slip joint pliers as well as a Crescent wrench on a Twinky yesterday... gotta get creative sometimes... but, haven't used a Screwdriver in Many Years..

BTW They do get tighter on their own... besides people put 'em on too Tight... should be Gasket lubed with oil, just touching gasket surface, then no more than 3/4 of a turn...

Bought the bike I have now a little more than a year ago. First thing I did was change all 3 holes. The filter was on so tight I virtually destroyed it after using several different methods. It turned into a hell of a mess. Racepres' suggestion works. I put almost 5000 miles on it since so when I changed the oil again a couple of months ago it was nowhere near the hassle it was compared to the first time.

Suzie,
I used a big ol' pipe wrench to get mine off. (1984 fxrt) It was on there extremely tight, I was almost at the point of destroying it but luckily it started to turn.
You might need to get someone to help you.

Default Thanks everyone!

I ended up getting it off with the screw driver and channel locks! Also douced the filter seal with penetrating oil and faught it for every centimeter. Used a razor to break the seal very gently.

But i gotter! 💪

Well done - you'll make an Evo owner yet! I've owned my 1990 Glide from new and tried all manner of tools over the years - none of them worked. Big screwdriver and rubber mallet never failed! As a concession to getting old I have recently bought a large 'socket' style with a square drive, in fact one for the Evo and a smaller one for my Buell and Sporty. They have worked so far.....

Having fought the same battle on a few occasions, never had to resort to the screwdriver method, but deferred to the Channel Loc technique. I now use K&N filters with the welded on nut. Channel Loc's are my backup plan... And as was posted: Don't over tighten it. Of note: On an EVO (unlike a twinkie) there is no need to pre-fill the new filter (but you should still lube the new gasket), as that is the last place the oil reaches in it's journey through the engine.
