That's an interesting question.

When I pulled the plugs, they looked good. If anything, they showed a bit rich.

I suppose there's a chance that I've got too much timing on the magneto, but I have a hard time thinking that could be it. If nothing else, setting that is touchier than hell. I static timed it to the crankshaft, and then a bit of wiggle from there. Can't be off by too much. Unless somehow the advance mechanism in the mag is wankered. But ultimately, the proof is in the pudding and the bike ran great with no sign of pinging or any of that.

Just got back from Mark's next door. Got the Cometic kit ordered. God willing, I'll get the top end pulled down tonight. Will be interesting to have a better look at things from there.

What did I miss??

Got this far tonight before I ran out of gumption. (And light. I'm trying to shoot this with my good camers as I go.)

Cranking it over with the covers off, the valves all seem fine, at least from on top.

Jeff I still think you are simply overthinking it.
It's a blown head gasket not the apocalypse and I highly doubt anything you did caused it.

You're exactly right. Assuming I don't uncover anything else in the disassembly, I'm just going to re-gasket everything and put it back together.

You know on second thought I think the S&S carb you put on must have caused your head gasket to blow.
Just by chance I have a CV and intake I'd be happy to trade you for that gasket killing S&S!!!!
I'm simply looking out for you buddy and doing my best to keep your life stress and worry free!!!!!
