Is that crack just carbon build up cracking?

Damn! You've got some good eyes on you! I held that thing in my hands and didn't notice that.

I'm guessing its just the carbon, but I'll take a closer look.

I ruined a turbo about that bad once, Matt. It was expensive, but I got pretty good at pulling a turbo on an Esprit. 50 minutes from opening the deck lid to putting the turbo on the bench.

That looks like carbon buildup to me. I think you're going to have to have that head skimmed, though. The fire ring area looks kinda bad from the pic. And that's not a crack between the valves, right? Just more carbon?

It is satisfying to find the smoking gun isn't it?

Not that the speculation is for naught, but if I would have piped up my answer would have been based on my dad's Evo Dyna doing some puffing out of the cylinder head due to a pulled case stud.

scrape off the goo and get a magnifying scope
If the cover is actually cracked. Gonna be harder to spot

I've never had the opportunity to clean the old gasket off the bottom of an Evo cylinder before.

Any tips?
