Also, there was no shim on the cam.

Watching this video it looks like all I'll need to do when re-assembling is to rotate the pinion gear (by rotating the rear wheel) until the timing mark is up and down and then install the cam to match that, then install the breather to match the cam? Is that correct?

Thanks. That's crazy. I can't imagine why someone would change the inner bearing, install adjustable pushrods, and keep the stock cam? Doesn't make sense to me. Oh well.

Perfectly normal.

Also normal for your year with a stock cam.

However you get there, you have to start with the mark on the pinion gear at 12 oclock and end up with the marks on all three (pinion/cam/breather) in alignment. Removing the spark plugs makes this way easier.

The "L" cam was the best factory grind for performance. Maybe the previous owner was happy with it.

I think I was overthinking the timing thing because of a cam-swap video I watched where the guy set the cam, pinion and breather before removing the cam. Doesn't make much sense the more I think about it.
When I re-install the cam I'll just turn the rear wheel till the pinion is at 12:00 noon, pointing up, then match the cam to the pinion, then match the breather to the cam.
I'm thinking about going with an andrews ev27 cam. I dont ride the FXR two up, it's a light bike, so I feel like that will be a nice choice. I'm not planning to do anything wiht compression or looking for huge performance, maybe just a little more mid and top end. The bike already has great low-end.
I'm also looking at doing the s&s steel breather. I really want to go with a cheap ebay steel breather but I don't think it's worth the risk.

It's plastic. I've read they degrade and break over time? Figure it was worth changing while in there.

I have >90K on mine. If it's not broke and money's tight, why bother?
