SE Air Cleaner install on 1990 EVO Softail

I just picked up a sweet 1990 Softail. Been looking for an EVO softail for a while and the price was right on this one.

It had the Kuryakyn HyperCharger on it but came with what looks like an almost brand new SE Air cleaner (part number 29008-90A).

I have a couple of questions on how the SE cleaner goes together -
  1. the main question is where does the metal spacer go (on the left side, center, under the two gaskets in the pic)? Does it go between carb and the big back plate or does it go between the back plate and the short velocity stack? I tried to find instructions on line and couldn't locate them.
  2. This 1990 is a bottom breather and they have a hose/filter on the breather port so I am good with leaving that, can I just plug the hole for the breather hose with a bolt?
  3. The HyperCharger has a vaccum line that goes to the bottom of the Hypercharger to control the butterflys - what do I do with this vaccum hose - plug it? or what?

I believe metal spacer with gasket on each side goes between carb and the big back plate.

1) I'm just guessing, but if this was mine, I'd start by dry-fitting carb -> gasket -> spacer -> gasket -> backplate -> "velocity stack" and see how everything lines up, looking for how those brackets line up with the bolt holes in the heads. None of this is super-critical. As long as everything fits without putting undue pressure on anything, it's got to be good enough.

2) That's what I'd do, and maybe a dab of silicone to make sure it seals, and for sure a drop of red locktite as insurance against the possibility it vibrates loose and gets sucked into the motor.

3) From the factory, the only vacuum line on your bike went from the carb to the voes. Sounds like someone cut a "T" fitting into that line for the Hypercharger. Rather than plug it off, I'd take things back to factory configuration and replace all existing vacuum lines with a single piece from the carb to the voes. I assume someone already routed the case breather hose back around the trans somewhere?

After a short google search it seems that part is a spacer so as mentioned above you should have a gasket on both sides of it.

What part of Texas are you in?

See attached instruction (J00048) sheet. Enjoy!

I have the same air cleaner... did not need the spacer for my set up. Dry fitting as suggested is the best method to figure out what works best.

Mis-alignment or improper spacing can create air leaks and lean condition.

I agree with loctite, but if you use red loctite instead of blue, use it sparingly. YD

Thanks all - I appreciate the instructions and help.

I also pulled the instructions for the KuryAkyn and there was indeed a T come of the line for the VOES. So I need to remove that and put the vacuum line directly on the carb.

Alright, that looks better than the HyperCharger!
