Default Clutch adjustment...again and again

Thinking problem is not adjustment related.
Many adjustments done (per FSM), anywhere from 1/4 turn to 1 turn back- off. Problem is not finding neutral, although hard sometimes.
Primary fluid at correct level.
Have "creep" at startup in gear, and cannot adjust this out.
Problem could be throwout bearing? Shifter fork? Plates stuck together?
I dunno ... out of ideas.
Thanks. Ken.

I don't know if this will help ya. After I got my 1995 RK last October I discovered a lot of problems. One being as you have described. After a process of elimination. I replaced the throw out bearing. Viola. Fixed it. Still have the universal dilemma of finding that elusive thing called neutral.

Put a dial indicator on the clutch pressure plate, you should have about .070" or more travel when pulling the clutch lever.
If it's a '97 or older, there's a spring plate in the clutch pack that's famous for the rivets coming apart.

On my 1985 FXR it's no big deal to pull the right side transmission cover. EVERY time I've had issues with clutch adjustment, or outright failure...the problem has been under there.
"Shift finger", throwout bearing, right-side pushrod end....I carry all of them in my saddlebag. When one ( or ALL OF THEM) go out, it's not a terribly difficult roadside fix, if you have the parts.
If not....you might find yourself 400 mi from home, at midnight on the side of the road in rural South Carolina...trying to find cell signal to call a roll back wrecker to get your bike off the road, and take you to an airport where you can rent a car, find a motel and stay overnight until the dealer opens.
I mean...that's what COULD happen. Don't ask me how I know.

Clutch pushrods can also cause this problem. The ends hardness wears and they shorten thru friction.

Loosen your cable adjuster all the way.
Loosen your clutch hub adjuster.
Pull your clutch lever back to the handle.
With one hand on the leaver tighten the clutch hub adjuster until you feel it in the lever.
Turn the clutch hub adjuster back about 1/8th of a turn and tighten the lock nut down.
Tighten the cable adjuster until almost all the slack is out of the cable.

You should be good to go at that point.

Thanks, guys. Will try THC's adjustment first ... that doesn't fix it I will be looking on right side, then pull/look at clutch. 42,000 mi. on 98 ultra. Gonna treat it like me. What damage mileage does+ time.
Appreciate the as usual great info from people with a lot more experience than me. Wouldn't be riding without your help. Ken.

I carry an extra "shift finger" and throw out bearing with me too. I' just might get an extra push rod too that way it's a matter of pulling the old one out and slipping the new one in already assembled. it's an easy road side fix.
