Default Noticed something odd about the drive belt.

I was doing a general inspection and noticed that part of the outside ribs on the drive belt is missing. What could have caused that? Is the missing ribs on the belt something to be concerned about?

Belt is rubbing somewhere. Yes, I would have concerns. I have seen these belts split radially from this. I would recommend finding the rubbing source and eliminating it, then put on a new belt.

I had a lower belt guard that was flimsy and it would raise onto the belt as I gained speed. If the bike was parked....the belt guard was in the right place.

Do you have the belt guards installed?
Do you ride on gravel roads?
It almost looks like a rock got stuck on upper part of belt as it enters front pulley and caused a strong scrub against back of belt.

A belt replacement is in order.
Unfortunately it is labor intensive as inner and outer primary will need to be removed.

Along with the labor....swing arm comes out if it’s a touring model.

Sucks, but I would get a new belt too.
A good INDY could do this in 3 hours or less if he really hustles.
Ask how much first.
With belt expect to pwy at least $400.
OUCH!

I agree, that looks bad, as it has worn down to the fabric inside the rubber. Definitely in need of replacement pretty soon. I can't imagine how it could happen, so do check running clearances pdq. Might be wise to find a chum to watch and listen, while you wheel the bike while seated on it.

That's a goner. Probably something got stuck between the belt and the belt guard.

“Something to be concerned about”..????
AB-SO-FREAKING-lutely . Were it mine, that bike is off the road until the belt is replaced, and hopefully along the way... figure out how that happened.

If belt guard clearance is good. You may want to look between the primary case and crank case cavity by getting under neath it. Could be something stuck in there that might require force in order to come out. Or it will happen again.
