I do not believe that the riding style caused this failure. I think the problem starter right at the key area, possibly an install hack at one time or another.

The shaft is 30 years old, that clutch has probably been installed a couple of times over that time...

Several ways to go here :

Replace you mainshaft with another tapered mainshaft, cheapest way to go because you don`t need to replace the clutch, but that old clutch is a crappy design...

I can send you a used tapered manishaft if you decide to go that way...

I wouldn`t consider replacing just the mainshaft in your current gearset, you would need to use a 1990 mainshaft, it is a one year only design, and the only one that will work with the `89 and earlier gearset.

Find an entire gearset from `91 or later, the later the better.

If you use a `90-`93 clutch it will be plug and play, it will have the same size primary chain sprockets and the same size starter ring gear.
i want to put a baker reverse on my trike but will only fit a splined shaft 90 on.so what you are saying i can change the main in my early shovel-evo 5 sp without changing gearset and clutch. is that correct.thank you

Damn man, I've broken or fixed a lot of hashed harley parts over the years including splitting a case on a 4 speed trans but that's the first time I've seen a mainshaft let go like that, Wow. Your guardian angel was working a bit of overtime or your karma bank is in good standing.

Think Andrews makes that mainshaft still or you can try a dealer but don't hold your breath there.

I saw this one earlier and your transmission reminded me. Lots of bad things can happen to mechanical devices. Ouch! Hope you're on the road soon!

Please start your own thread, it gets too confusing trying to keep track of who asked what.

Wondering off someone used to much heat on that shaft at some point in its life. That's a serious chunk of steel.

I think that there was a crack, or flaw in the shaft that was there since the original install. Right at the key way. Notice the left side of the shaft in the second pic. It is not a clean break like the right side is. The metal on the two sides look completely different.

You've had this conversation in another thread and the answer hasn't changed. To put a reverse on your trike you are looking at a mainshaft , complete clutch pack as the two are very different, inner primary and starter swap to accommodate the different clutch pack . This is hard facts isn't going change no matter how many times you ask it, someone tells you different they don't know the differences in the parts required
