? on the factory built 86 FXWG
Hi Everybody,
 \\;
I am BB, and I just joined the forum today. Last week I bought a real clean 1986 FXWG and have been trying to find some info on the internet about the 86 WG's. The VIN on the bike frame is for an 86 WG, but the motor only has 4 numbers and they do not match the any numbers on the frame. \\; \\;I called HD customer service and talked to a nice gal, that told me their were 579 FXWG's built in 1986. I \\;gave her my \\;vin numbers and \\;she \\;told me that, \\;the numbers on the motor should match the frame numbers and since they don't then the motor must have been replaced at some time, I thought no big deal, the important thing is it runs \\;great.
 \\;
Here is the strange part, today I rode the bike over to a \\;retired Harley wrench and he looked at the bike and told me it was all original, he said \\;that \\;every \\;1986 FXWG was a custom made bike, because the \\;EVO engins had to be fitted to the old style FX frame \\;and not every bike was built the same, \\;the factory \\;built as many as they could, which resulted in some FXWG's haveing different parts then others and it was possible for the number on the engin not to match the number on the frame on a 1986 FXWG.
 \\;
I have done a search on the internet and also searched the past post on this and other forums and \\;there is not a lot of info on the 1986 FXWG, \\;I am not complaining, to me the \\;bike is a rolling piece of art, \\;the build quality is top notch. \\;Any info would be appreciated and welcomed.

All in all, I'd try to keep it original if it isn't already. Not so much for value as it would be for showing how they're supposed to look. That was just be fore the mad rush to own harley's and people were still doing major makeovers on them and now you see very few examples of originals from '70's and '80's

I have an 85 WG and I can't tell if the #'s on the engine match because I've painted over but I know it's longer then 4 digits. The WG's were were only made in 85 and 86 with the EVO motor, belt drive and kicker so hang onto it. Believe it or not stock and in good condition it's worth more now the when it was built.

Not to insult your wrench, but I really dont agree with his theory. The 4 speed frames were slightly different than the older shovel frames to fit the taller evo motor in for '85 and '86, and I believe most states required traceable numbers for frames and engine back then, meaning that they had to match. I really dont think the Moco would have shipped bikes without the correct numbers on the engines \\;to dealers. Also, there were FX models with the evo beside the FXWG in 85 and 86. That aside, your bike is a classic and not seen very often, and will get more attention than some yuppy on his new softail or dyna.

Thanks for the replys,
Don't worry about insulting my wrench, he is a thick skinned old fart, he was just telling me his \\;experience on working on some of the \\;85 and 86 WG's, he could be part wrong and a little bit right, I am ok with the numbers,  \\;it runs great and it is SO COOL, the kicker gives it the clasic old school look. I will post some pic's soon as I get the grimlin out of my photo software for my computer, right now I have failure to communicate between the digital camera and the computer.

I feel your pain, brother. Computers used to be my friends, now they're my nemesis. Either they've gotten smarter, or I've gone stupid.
Welcome to the forums. I've got a '86 FXRS, and love it to death. Not that a 105 Anniversary Heritage wouldn't be cool.
FWIW, the numbers on my frame and engine are the same.
