Does the Ultima 96 or 107 seem more reliable than 113 or 120 ? I really would like to upgrade but usually ride more than 10,000 miles a year and need something that is going to hold up well in our '90 Ultra. I have read the thread 107 in a 1990 bagger and there seems to mixed results and most have less than 10,000 miles on their Ultimas.
thanks in advance

Hell, I could buy a modern V-8 long block for less than most of the "Harley" engine options out there.. The prices are pretty silly, when considering the technology..

That was the reason this thread was started to hopefully hear from some more ultima (OWNERS) and hear their feedback directly I know there are a quite a few on this site with more miles than I have and I hope to hear from them. I know the 120 is touted as a touring motor with the focus on reliability since it has a larger bore and shorter stroke. It would be interesting to hear about how far it will go without any problems. A few points that caught my attention was the larger Crank pin 1.670 VS 1.5 Larger wrist pin .927 Larger bore 4.25. Twin cam style cooling fins on the heads HV oil pump to name a few. So far I am pleased and spent less on replacing this motor than my buddy did with upgrading his 88" to 95".

Ultima 96 inch in a 90 bagger
At around 6000 mi I had a lifter go bad, damaged the cam, and the heads were leaking. When I took it apart I found that the head bolts were loose.
Replaced with... S&S Heads, lifters, and a comp 5005 cam. Now it shines!! have gone 7000+ since the fix. 42+ miles to the gallon too
Added a new Thunderheader, not the same motor as I started with. WOW!! It will get with it!!!
And by the way...I do use a VOES

Hey all,
My 107" is a few days over a year old. It has 13,000 miles on the motor. I have had no engine problems as of today. I did have an ignition go out at about 10,000 miles, but the mechanic at the rally had an exact replacement and Jerih replaced the defective one. I have not had it dynoed yet as there is none in my area. Thought i would do it at the last rally but after talking to the tech I decided to wait until i could get some good gas. I am statisfied with my choice in this engine and the 107" makes the old 90 dresser scream. I still have some pinging problems when my gf and i and a loaded bike are climbing a long grade and I roll the throttle too quick and to far. I have started down shifting and stopped the pinging. I think the 107" is perfect for my bike and riding, but I haven't ridden a 113, 120 or a 127. maybe after a 100,000 or so i might sell it and buy me a 120 - 127 "
Hey HGM, where is that covered bridge located ? Nice picture !

Its just NW of Roberta Ga., just West of Macon and Tifton. I happened upon it one day and decided to get some pics. I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out.. If your in the area, let me know and I can give you directions.

Classic beast. Other than the fact that the 110 is a tc design motor from harley and the ultima is a evo design made to be a much larger motor than what hd meant it to be with heavier case thickness The only thing alike is there both v-twins for harleys. If you pay attention to hd products they don't often fix problems when they develop and just keep adding to a already existing design problem. It amost always takes the after market to fix the problems. When you look at the rear wheel hp that the 119tc makes its not anymore than most aftermarket 95" kits make. I could expect a 100 or 107 to go high milage but not maybe a 120 from anybody with a good mantenance program.
