Without having a schematic in front of me, I can't pinpoint it but your problem should be in your power supply to your ignition switch as everyone mentioned or your connection at the switch but I would head towards that relay because heat(switched on) would make a weak relay shut down intermittantly. 2 different circuits are acting up ecm power and starter solenoid power which both are controled by the ignition switch.

And Go Bucks!

Or it could be one of those damn 70's brain locks I seem to be getting more and more often.....

I've had the same type of problem twice on my '94.. Switch on, lights on, nuthin when you push the button.. Both times it has been the cheap *** "run" switch/button... The last time (last summer), I decided to cut the harness at the neck and splice the wire together. I now have no "run" or "start" button opperation, but with the manual button on the starter, my bike has never failed to start and continue running since..

In diagnosing it, you can rock the run switch several times, fairly roughly to see if it makes a difference.. Obviously, it would also be very helpfull to check the voltage to and through the switches..

Hackd - your brain is not THAT locked! The entire 1994-1998 FL Touring line did indeed have an ignition switch recall. A quick google search came up with this recall. Nothing about fire - just loss of electrical power due to current overloading. The fix was apparently to install a new switch and circuit breaker, and add a relay.

I don't know if Bertha's switch was ever replaced - but it seems to work fine. I've never had the issues described in this thread though...
