Default softail gas tank for an fxr???

i looked at a softail tank today at the harley shop. the tunnel where the frame backbone resides looked square. if so, then aren't fxr's backbone also square? if the dimensions work out, will it work to use a softail tank on my 92 fxr? if someone has had experience with this, please let me know, i'm curious because i'd like the fat style twin cap tank with the center gauge console.

Just got my Flatside tanks back from the powder coater, will be installing them today. My bike is a 95 fxd, which I assume is very similiar to yours. You just have to mount the bracket to your frame at the bottom front and weld the mount for the back on the top of the frame. And yes, the backbone is square with a flat top. Hope this helps. As some on here have said, if you want to do something there is generally a way, and someone has probably already done it.

I've never heard it called a "Softail" gas tank before. I believe you're talking about a fatbob style tank with the center mounted speedo/tach console...just like this 1988 FXRS:

I've never had the softail tank and an FXR side by side but I've been told the softy tunnel is too narrow. Road King tanks will work if you're going for the tank mounted speedo, FLH tanks will work if you just want extra fuel capacity... FXD's aren't even close, the top tube is much narrower than the FXR. That's just one of the reasons for the FXR's clear superiority as a canyon carver... ;-)

"no i dont have it hooked up (see the ignition key below the back of the tank)"

That ought to keep a thief flustered for a while...
