Default moving 3/4" axle up to 1" newer rim

Ok not sure how to ask this. Ive been looking at custom18" and 21" rims for the front my 98 FLHT. Not finding much for this year due to the dual disc and 3/4" axle size? Anyway is there a thread or info, you tbe etc. for putting newer rim on this bike. Seems like the 2000 and newer have a 1" axle. What all would be involved with changing out? New bearings, axle , maybe brackets. Thanks for all you help so far!

I have a 1" axle and rear wheel in my 1990 Glide, but I also installed a later swingarm and brake at the same time. Frankly the 3/4" swingarm is not man enough for opening out to take a 1" axle and there is another way!

My understanding is that recent wheels that take 1" bearings will also take 3/4" and 25mm (the most recent size) and that bearing/spacer kits are available. So if you buy a set of later spec wheels you can fit 3/4" bearings. However if your bike has tapered roller bearings, the later wheels take sealed ball-races, so you may have some juggling to do with spacers, even axles.

This is a more popular topic over in the Touring forum (you'd be amazed at what they get up to over there!), so it is worth taking a look. You may find your answer there.

I would scour Ebay and see if you could find a whole front end. Everything changed between those years...and unless you have a machinist friend, mixing and matching parts on a dual disc is a little difficult. If you changed the lowers you could use 2000 up stuff, and they changed a lot of parts again in 07 and went to a 25mm axle. Good Luck.

When I considered selling my wheels and going with the "FatDaddy" type wheel I ran into the same deal,3/4-1".I wrote to several of the suppliers and they all told me the same thing....I can do it but I need to switch out the bearings which was no big deal. One of the places sold the bearings if I chose to do it. If i can come across the old emails,I'll post them.
