Primary / Transmission Related Bearing Noise?

Turned out to be the counter shaft main bearing had come apart. Also the throw - out bearing was close to breaking down. Was told it looked real good inside regarding no visible gear wear or damage, same with the shifting components.
I added a kevlar belt and a metzler 880 rear.
It may take me a week to find time now to put it back together the rest of the way.
Looking forward to heading back down the road again .... soon.

John,
I have considered a different fluid than today's H/D combo. The rebuilder considers the H/D to be what keeps his '86 running after 220,000 and already filled the case. I consider it to be a "standard shifting transmission" and felt gear lube could be better choice than "primary oil" too.
Your right. All of it was rebuilt. I have all of the old parts in a box except for the roller ***** that came from the damaged bearing which also left a few large shards of the bearing's cage broken up, and lying around. Some drained out and some was stuck on the drain plug.
Part of the cost was a gasket rebuild kit and every bearing was replaced along with seals. It's a 100% overhauled tranny now done by a guy who's been building them for 30+ years. My mechanic is old school back to Shovels.
Looks like I won't be reassembling for another week. Other projects will keep me busy until then.
I can't wait to reassemble, and roll out!

I had a whine in mine but only in 4th (the equivalent of your 5th).
Turned out is was the transmission main bearing.
First tip is to take it apart and get eyes on the various bearings.

Hey, someone woke up this old thread.
I'm happy to report the tranny is still going strong and I now use gear lube in it and have for a while. 80w140 (if I'm remembering correctly) by Lucus.
It would seem the issues I had from the day I bought it could only be attributted to it having higher miles than the seller stated, or perhaps he was just being sneeky when he said 35K original mile. After this winters top end overhaul needed .20 over bore job I think it had a 100K plus 35K. Right now I've got it torn down and putting in another stator (cycle electric ltd). Seemed the Harley OEM 32 amp only lasted 4 seasons with about 30K on it. Bike is at 168K right now I also put in an S&S super "E" earlier this season and that was the best move I could have made. With .20 over and 9.6:1 instead of 8.5:1, the EV27 cam and the new carb, it runs like a race bike. It's in great shape and never run so good!
