my understanding has always been that you DO NOT want to run a TC filter on an EVO motor.

A TC filter is certified to use on an Evo by the engine manufacturer.

Plenty of people use them with no issue.

Big differences between the two filters is less restriction, lower filtration, and lack of Anti Drain Back Valve (ADBV) in the Evo. In use, the Evo filters oil between the engine and the tank and the TC filters between the tank and the engine. A filter with higher restriction like the Super Premium 5 on an Evo often causes some problems. Basic problem is too much oil in the crank (sumping). Oil out the breather, sluggish engine, smoking may result. The operator may or may not notice or may mis-diagnose the cause. The MoCo actually used to list the SP 5 filter as an “upgrade” to the Evo (maybe still do?) but experience says otherwise. Some restrictive automotive filters on an Evo can cause the same symptoms. Some automotive filters work fine and some are actually app’d for use on Evos by the manufacturer (3614 Champ Ecores and 51215 Wix for example).

You do what you want, but I'm sticking with EVO spec filters.

Features & Benefits

K&N powersports oil filters are ‘TUV’ product endorsed and ‘TUV’ factory production monitored. Our filters contain a modern synthetic filter media, designed for ultimate flow with less pressure drop, yet engineered for outstanding filtration. K&N powersports ‘spin-on’ oil filters feature a heavy-duty metal can. Most of these have a 17mm nut affixed onto the end that allows for easy installation and removal. The 17mm nut is crossed-drilled so racers can safety wire the filter to their bike.
  • O/E replacement oil filters for most cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, & ATVs
  • 17mm exposed nut designed for easy oil filter removal
  • Heavy duty construction for extreme conditions
  • Resin-impregnated filter media traps 99% of harmful contaminants
  • Anti-drainback valve (where applicable) eliminates dry starts, prevents oil from draining back into crankcase during engine shutdown

I lifted this quote from the link I gave in #5:

It is very tempting to look at other filters, but having read the K&N stuff I don't see anything that says they are OK for Evos, let alone Harleys. That other thread makes clear that Evos and TCs have different oiling systems, which is why they have different filters (if we ignore the 'experts' that is!).

For the little cash I might save I prefer to use branded filters. Having an S&S motor I use either S&S or Harley Evo filters.

Not only are most of those bikes Evos, but a few are shovels! Do you have a factory service manual for your FXR3? That should confirm the type of filter you should use.
