My bike is a stock 1990 with 31000 miles. Reading all these lifter
Failure stories has got me spooked, should I just replace them
Or do I have some more mileage to go?

 

If it ain't broke don't fix it. My bike went 100k without lifter problems then it got a harley reman and has gone another 26k still no problems.

Yeah I get that way sometimes too. I go talk to my guru and he tells me to stop worrying about whatever I was worrying about.

 

I replaced my lifters when I did a cam swap. New cams new lifters I was told. I had 40,000 on the oem lifters and they looked fine when I pulled them
