1986 Heritage starter solenoid install
I am replacing the starter solenoid on my heritage and noticed that when I removed the old starter solenoid it was setout differently than that specified in the workshop manual.
The picture of old solenoid has a pin inside the rubber boot and then another further up the shaft to hold the spring off the rubber boot and then a pin holding the washer in place at the end..
I installed it as shown in the manual with a pin inside the rubber boot and the spring resting on the rubber boot and then a pin holding the washer in place at the end.
Which way is the correct way?
The only difference between the two layouts is the third pin in the centre holding the spring off the rubber boot.
I have also included the starter solenoid assembly details as shown in the workshop manual.

Thanks for the diagram, it is very easy to follow now and I should be able to get it right....
There is one thing that is different but that may be something that has changed from one year to the next and hopefully the layout of the other items etc.. are the same.
The diagram shows shifter lever screw (23) but on my bike there is no screw but instead a small bolt that holds the shaft of the shifter lever in place.
Do you think his is standard for the 1986 Heritage?
Anyway I will set it up a shown in the diagram you sent and see if it works.
The other option I have been told is to do away with the starter solenoid and replace it with a manual lever that you use to start the bike, have you heard of these and are they any good?

Your pic shows a amateur repair for an overtightened bolt...a good welder could repair that, or you need to replace the inner primary....but an 86 inners are impossible to find....they are a bastard mix between a 4 and 5 speed and they only made them for 3 years.
The levers work fine and look cool on a barebones chopper...kinda out of place on a heritage IMO
Your absolute best bet is to scour ebay and find a complete 89 up primary, that someone removed to install a belt drive...that will give you a modern starter and solve many problems.
