5 speed clutch and primary interchangeablity
{sorry for the stud-er 55 in the title meant to to read 5 speed. I can't find how to fix it?}
I am building a bike and with a 1997 5 speed from a softail OEM style inner primary and installing it in a rigid frame with a late shovel engine. I am needing to get educated on the interchange of parts before I start buying parts that don't fit. images show what I have so far.
the 24 tooth front pulley and chain are from a 4 speed the clutch pack
are from a 5 speed.
will a clutch drum from a touring bike fit, starter alignment, chain ect. as long as it matches my clutch pack?
i see there are a couple different clutch pack configurations, one has more notches {like the one I have} on the outside of clutch steels which fit in the clutch drum and the other has less. if the clutches and drum match up will either fit my application? is one better than the other?
if touring bike primary components do fit would the gear ratio be a consideration?
I am trying to use all of the parts I now have to make this work if possible but do see a couple touring bike set up {complete} on ebay that may be the way to go
thanks for any help.

5 speed OEM clutch packs that fit a splined mainshaft 94-97 are all the same as they have the earlier diaphragm clutch, 1998 is when they changed to the TC type clutch (way easier to work on) and that fits the same mainshaft as earlier ones.
You need the pre '98 clutch basket for what you have in the pic.

thanks for the info guys.
sounds like a am in the market for a clutch drum and a few other pieces to set up the primary drive.
Hi Rick yep been out of commission for a few years. had knee replacement then surgery to fix the knee replacement. now retired and living with a pain in the knee.
I dunno why I think I need a rigid frame motor bike but then again why not. I have always liked the look of the choppers from when I started riding in the 70's just never had one of my own.
I have been calling this bike my scratched and dented parts bike, parts left over from building my 91 FLSTc
I really had no intentions of building this into a functional bike but is has taken on a life of its own.
I found the frame at a yard sale many years ago, it was a swing arm with the rigid section welded on. The frame was bent, took a serious hit to the front end. I put it on our frame rack and got it pretty close after some major pulls. this winter I set the engine cases and trans in the frame expecting nothing to fit due to the wreck it was in but to my surprise things were looking pretty close so got an inner primary to fit up. After a little grinding on the rear of the seat post so the trans would go ahead 1/4 inch or so the primary fit right up. So installed the wideglide and a rear wheel and a hand full of paper work off to DMV to see about getting a title. So far so good but until it is reviewed I won't know if I get a title or not. they did assign a VIN for the bike.

yes those starter levers are a good deal for sure.
I started a new page for the rigid project over in the shovel forum
I posted this clutch / primary ? here since it is an Evo part.
probably wouldn't have made any difference.
I have heard may good out comes from people which had the knee replacement so that is why I had mine totally replace. if I had it to do again I would have waited.
I was told I am one of the few who it wasn't a good deal. I just traded one kind of pain and issues with another kind. But now I have a bunch of hardware in my leg and there is NO undoing it. good luck with your knee and keep my posted.
