Default '89 FXLR vs '93 FXLR

Buddy is looking at two bikes since riding my '92 FXLR. Both are very clean and mileage is good. My question is, what model improvements (if any) should he be aware of between a '89 versus a '93?

Depending on condition of both bikes the 93 would be my first choice due to spline shaft clutch instead of key way.

Some people can over read into things too. Bottom breather versus top breather. INA versus Timken.
I would buy the one that I liked best or looked better. Be happy with either too.
What I'm poking at is that if I ended up with the '89 I'd change the bearing and lifters at 40k. Same as the 1993. I wouldn't upgrade the cam bearing until it was scheduled maintenance time or I was swapping the cam. A lot of bad info about the ina out there.

Thanks for the details. Both bikes are generally solid. All things being equal (except price of course) just wondered about model improvements (or downgrades) in the '93 over the '89. Good to know about the spline.
