I'm back--with a problem
Though I never really left, between travelling back and forth to the U.S. and work I have had not time for my bike. I have a question/problem with oil pressure. My bike is a 97 Ultra with efi. It is stock with an Andrews EV13 cam and an Ultima oil pump. The motor was completely rebuilt and has about 500 miles on it. When I start it up the oil pressure pegs out. After it warms up it drops to about 35 and after 30 minutes or so it will drop to zero and the oil light will come on. I pull over, turn it off and start it back up and I have oil pressure again, but after a while, same thing, back to zero and oil light comes on. The engine doesn't change, no knocking or anything, but I never run it after the light goes on. I'll pull over and restart it. Its about to drive me crazy as I have yet to take it out for any long distances. I have changed the oil and filter (20w50 and HD Evo filter), checked/replaced the oil lines and tappet screen. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

You might try replacing your oil pressure switch.
If your oil pressure gauge is pegging out it may be damaged and therefore not indicating accurately. |
Could be as suggested above or the pump itself maybe faulty. I'd check both, especially if you have no leaks causing a drop in oil pressure.

My vote's going to be the spring in the pressure relief valve.

And make sure your idle speed is at least 850 rpm. Anything lower and your light most likely will come on |
Last night I traded out the pressure relief springs from my old oil pump to the new one. It didn't affect the oil pressure at initial start up, but it did drop to about 35 a bit sooner than before. After it got hot (about 30 minutes of riding), the same thing, pressure would drop to 0 and light would come on. I pulled over, turned it off, started it right back up, and oil pressure again, but now in the 10-15 range. At stops it drops very low 0-5 and eventually the light comes back on. The idle is about 950-1000 rpm.

I'm going with "new pump." Put an S&S or a Genuine HD pump on it. I would not ride it until it had a new pump, but that's just me.

Is there a way to check the pump? I don't mind replacing the pump, but what a pita it is to pull the motor, unless someone knows a different way to change it out.

I assume it is safe to use the old shaft. I had to cock the engine sideways to replace the shaft as it hit the transmission when I replaced the old one.
