Default noise behind timing cover

Intermittent noise behind timing cover ,accompanied by missing, popping, then it quits and runs fine.Wondering if i can take the cone off to check things out without taking off rocker boxes.I have plenty of Sportster wrenching but first time in a big twin Any advice would be appreciated.

one spot in the rotation of a stock motor will have a loose spot and with that you will need a puller for the cam cover - i have done it many times BUT for a different reason - you have a bad lifter and or a bad lifter roller on it - most likely it has damaged the cam already - i hope not but but a worn out roller no longer turns all the time and drags its self across the cam lobe

do it once do it the right way

Put the notch that the ignition cup locates into at the 5 o'clock position and you'll be there but it wont tell you much as all the parts that go sick and make a noise are still hidden if you pull the cam cover.

You don't have to pull the tanks an rocker boxes of you go with adjustable push rods. I'm getting ready to change my cam an bought a set. there's some listed in the evo classified section right now.

My '93 Ultra classic made the same noises just before a lifter wheel bearing let go and ruined the motor. It had just under 50k on it before it let go. How many miles on your bike?.,,,

18,000 showing on the odometer, but I dont think that is right.not planning on riding it until I find the problem. If I go with adjustable push rods,I just take the cam out with valve spring pressure on the push rods ?95 softail

No
Your first step if your gonna do that is cut the push rods you have with bolt cutters.
That will take the pressure off your lifters.

Just removing the cam cover about the only thing to be seen up close will be the oil breather, your lifters, cam and or bearing will still be inside and not very visible. If you are going with adjustables just make sure you use bolt cutters for a clean (no filings) cut, or remove rocker boxes and remove pushrods taking care to note location as they are varying lengths, You then can pull lifter blocks and inspect, pull cam and inspect and see bearing to check for wear.
