The faded LCD Odometer fix thread

I posted a fix for fading/unreadable LCD Odometers in a couple of other threads but didn't include everything needed to do the job. Below is the p/n and other information for upgrading from a EVO LCD speedometer to a newer twin cam speedometer.

The p/n for the upgrade kit is 67033-95D. That p/n covers all FLHR from 95-98. List price from HD was $499 but I got mine at a discount for $250 because the kit had been sitting on the dealers shelf for 10 years. Keep in mind that there will probably be mileage on the odometer when you buy it. Call corporate HD at he number listed on their website to locate a dealer in the US who has one. The mileage cannot be reset or changed. You'll have to ask about a discount. It's up to the dealer. One speedometer I found had zero miles on it and the dealer wouldn't budge on price. I didn't bother with that one.

Other upgrade kits are listed below

67027-96C 96-98 softail
67033-94C 94 flhr
67178-95C 95 FXDWG
67178-96C 96-98 FXDWG

The job isn't too hard. I spent 1/2 day on mine. There are a lot of wires to be cut and have contacts crimped on them. The instructions are included and are excellent. I had one wire left over, a pink one. It was marked "pursuit" which I believe is for a police bike. The new speedometer/odometer is nice and works fine.

There is another fix where you take the odometer apart from the speedometer and replace it. If someone wants to add a link to that thread it would make this more complete. According to the thread, it isn't easy to do but will be much cheaper than the above fix. Other options include buying an aftermarket speedometer from the usual online places. I believe you will get them cheaper than $250.

Here's a link to a thread I posted that has some good information and instructions in it regarding the LCD screen replacement. It can be done.

Thanks, guys. I'm going to have to do something about the one on my chopper. It is all a bunch of squiggles on the left.

So: Buy used one on ebay, swap out LCD. That's about it, right?

The pink wire should be the wire for the tach, if you get a combo tach/speedo.

Doc I reread your post about your chopper odometer and it sounds like what I did may work for you. Mine was unlegible and did have scribbles which were in fact just the LED numbers bleeding through. It was kind of tedious as I did not want to break anything but the directions from IM were spot on. Take your time removing the outer trim ring, when it was reinstalled the back side doesn't look too sweet but it is not seen. But the end result is I have a functioning odometer now.
I found an odemeter from a wrecked road king on ebay.
Good Luck it can be done.

I ran across this video showing the process some time ago. Perhaps it'll help someone.
