Ignition Switch doesn't lock - can't remove.

First of all, new to the harley game so there is a ton I don't know.

Picked up what I believe is a 1990 FLH, though I'm not quite up to speed on the naming conventions just yet. It's got a fairing like in the picture.

One of the issues I have is whatever I do, I can't get the ingition lock to function. The forks I can get to lock by turning the knob to lock(far left) but the knob itself won't lock, despite being in the 'lock' position.

I've read that sometimes people reassemble the units incorrectly so I figured I'd pop the knob/shaft assembly out and monkey around in there to see if I can get it working.

Now, I've looked around some and everyone refers to turning the key counterclockwise and depressing a tab on the underside of the knob. Trouble is, I can't find any such tab. I have a clymers manual for the evo touring bikes and it also refers to the turn-key-depress-tab process, but like I said, there is no tab that I can see. I don't know if maybe there is a different process for the canadian bikes(mine has the kph more prominently displayed on the gauge faces).

I've attached some pics and would appreciate any guidance.

Oh, and what is the knob on the right side control cluster for? I can't find mention of it in my service manual.

that "knob" is an adjusting screw.

puts tension on your throttle.

completely removed this on my machine.

I consider it as unneeded and dangerous.

Last pic is a throttle lock Nice to have to warm up the bike without having to hold the choke on.

Toss the Clymer and get a Factory Service Manual otherwise known as an FSM.
Its way better than the Clymer.

First off, you need a real factory shop manual, not a Clymer. Next, the Canadian bikes were the same as the US bikes, except for 2 things: The Km/H speedo and one DoT sticker.

I probably watched that video 6 times and read every post I could find on the topic before posting here - mine is an older model, and I see no 'tab' like in the video to depress on mine. Everyone makes mention of a tab, and any photo I've seen doesn't seem to match with my bike. I don't think I tried depressing the largish plate with the two dimples(rivets?) in my picture, I'll give that a crack tomorrow.

-------

The people have spoken - I'll be getting a FSM ASAP. The Clymer's came with the bike.

Where are you guys sourcing your service manuals from? The Harley website doesn't seem to have anything for manuals, despite having a section. Maybe the website is being funny, I'll try again in a few days.

This is completely untrue. The throttle lock is a friction device that still allows the throttle to be closed simply by rotating forward.

Ignition switch removal on old style fairing bikes is a PIA,

There's no release button, but a lever, I don't think you have to remove everything they did here.

E-bay, the dealership, or an indy can get you one from a dealership if you don't have a dealership in your area.
