The 27 sounds like what the OP may have had. I just didn't like to wind the Softail tight enough, often enough to benefit from it.
Agreed.

I have a EV27 in my 97 RK because some fukin indie talked me into it. "Best cam for that motor" he said. "Everybody does that and loves it" he said.

Then I paid him to put the cam in and afterward, I asked about remapping the power commander and he looked me right in the eye and said "you donlt need to do that, that cam won't get no more air in there".

That was the end of my indie relationship and the beginning of me doing all my own ****.

As for the EV27, sure, it's great if you like to wind your motor out like a rice burner, and don't want any pull until you hit 2800 rpm. I haven't bothered to change it because that is kind of a "bling bike" now. If I rode it every day, it would have a EV13 for sure.

I have a ev27 and hardly ever hit 5K rpm even racing. Just the way my engine is built, nice torque. I don't want to mess with it running so good.

Thanks to all for comments.
Will make a decision and post results. Probably leaning towards the EV13.

Just my 2 cents for my 97 EG

If you do a fair amount of 2 up riding as we have the EV13 is a great choice or equivalent. Nowadays not so much but the EV13 has still done me well.

A friend put an EV27 in and it did well. Then latter he bumped the compression up. That really woke his bike up nicely.

Good luck either way ya go

I should probably stipulate that I am running mine with stock compression, which was a choice I made because I was actually using the bike for touring at the time.

I'm quite certain that I would like the EV27 much more if I brought the CR up to around 10:1. That may be in the cards for next winter.

I have the 10-1 pistons with the ev27, but I also have the power commander 5, the auto tuner and the power commander data logger/display. Mine comes on good at 2300/2400 rpms, and I have never gone over 5200 rpms. I keep the AFR between 12.6 and 13.6 with the auto tuner.

I have 10-1 weisco pistons, built heads, and compression should still be around 195+ lb cold. I could easily put a larger cam in it for more hp but rather keep some longevity in the engine. Bike sounds like a pro stock on the road and pulls off quite nicely. I don't like messing too much with an engine that's already plenty fun, and the engine is quiet as a new engine, don't burn oil, just back tires.

Big Bertha, my 1984 Evo powered FLHTC, has developed quite a bit of lifter noise. I am going to install new lifters and a new cam. Years ago, I had a 1991 FLHT. Put close to 60K on it with an Andrews cam, adjustable push-rods etc. I cannot recall whether the cam was a 13 or a 27. What I can recall is the bike really came alive at around 3,000 RPM, and was MUCH better for 2-up cruising at 75 MPH, or right around 3,500 RPM.
So..... in your opinion.....did I have a EV13 or EV27?
Current ride has big sucker air cleaner, CV Keihen carb and Paughco fishtails.
Thanks in advance-
Mike
What you should be asking also is; which carb will have the oomph to get up and go -FAST! - when on the hiway of interstate and need to pass quickly and not need a mile to do it like with the stock cams.

I asked this in an e-mail to Andrews. Told 'em too that I was a big guy, damn near like two-up on a bike. They told me the EV13 was what I wanted and needed. So I got it. Haven't put it in yet as I can't find any decent video on the 'net for replacing a cam on a '98 evo bike (the shop manual isn't a lot of help either but I'm more of a 'see it and do it' than a 'read it and do it' type. Can't afford to have someone else do it at all, heh. Got the S&S quickee pushrods, new bearing, .050 shim and gaskets, just need a little more info on how to do the change and I can do it.

Wasn't there a kit back in the day that included a ev-13, a mikuni carb, and maybe something else. Sold for baggers so they could pass big rigs without downshifting?
