Default Throttle doesn’t snap back

This has been a long standing issue since I’ve switched from CV to S&S. I’ve noticed that even with the adjustment it will move back but not smoothly. So my current theory is that the cable guide is too tall. I’ve got the CV guides on there but have aftermarket cables. Could using the short guide help?

No, it's in the adjustments, trust me.

Try loosening the return cable a couple rounds, have to leave some slack in it to not bind,

Sometimes it is the throttle grip itself rubbing against against the switch control assembly.

I have had the throttle cable half tight and no tension on the idle cable. This is the only way I could get close but it’s never perfect

i have s&s carb with cv guides .. i got prewired bars, and new cables,
cable metal end wouldnt fit in the guide, i had to open the guide up a tad so it slide in and seated right ..if im not mistaken it was the return cable
i also did new grips... to me it sounds like your grip is rubbing, cause even with some tension on the return it should come back, maybe not snap back.. but should return

All the "snap" is done by the carb spring.
Loosen the adjusters and check the carb spring return.
Then twist the throttle to see if there's any binding.
Turn the throttle until it stops without forcing it past the stops inside the perch,
then take up the cable slack with the adjuster until you've got the carb fully open.
Then take up the slack in the return cable. The return cable doesn't control the carb it controls the throttle.
Technically it's a safety and wasn't even on early bikes. If it's not snapping back it's either the carb spring or the throttle "GO" cable.
Both cables are "PULL" cables.
1 pulls the carb open via the throttle
1 pulls the throttle back via the carb spring. (this is where the "SNAP" comes from.)
Check for possible binding in the cables caused by routing too.

PS. You probably know all this but as you're having a problem it couldn't hurt to go over it again.

I have found when using the taller guides to loosen the right side tank and run the cables along the back bone to reduce the angle of the cable going into the guide..

You need to determine what is causing the bind up. Three places:

1- the carb
2- the cables (two of them)
3- the throttle assembly.

Disconnect the cables at the carb, does the carb snap back by itself without being influenced by the cables? If no, carb is problem.

If yes, does the throttle assembly turn freely? If no, disconnect cables and determine if cables or throttle assembly.

Either cable can be an issue. Some can be fixed with lubrication, some need replacement. Good luck.
