Evo speedo's...

Like most Evo-aged bikes, my '97 FLSTC (Heritage Softtail Classic) had a crappy working odometer, or I should say only half-working odometer. I *HAD* to have a fix!

I got the V-Twin speedometer and the Drag Specialties harness (the V-Twin harness $30 more than the Drag Specialties harness, so I hoped the Drag Specialties would work on the V-Twin speedometer). I was putting this on my 1997 Heritage Softtail Classic. The original speedometer was finally starting to wear out, meaning that the LCD display only worked when it was above 55 degrees F and allowed to soak up some sun heat before it would finally show a reading. Since the FLSTC's don't have a gas gauge, I need a trip meter/odometer to know how many miles I've gone before needing to fill up with gas.

The V-Twin speedo has no tach, but the Drag Specialties version for this bike does. I don' need no steenking tachomter! So I got the less expensive V-Twin speedo but got the Drag Specialties harness. (V-Twin speedo HERE and harness for it HERE)

This combination was *very* easy to install and took about 30 minutes. Cut three wires on the original speedo that are held onto the back with small brass nuts. Tape those ends or pull them into the sleeving an inch or so, so that they don't contact any metal.

Pull everything out, clean the rubber stock gasket in soap and water and then lightly oil so it will let the new speedo slide into it and it will seal once again. Put the rubber gasket over the trip/odometer button so the rubber will grab the ring that screws on and holds it in the side of the instrument panel and tighten it *gently*...it doesn't need to be cranked down hard at all.

Everything was simply plug and play other than that. Put the whole thing back on the tanks, tuck things in nice and neat, bolt it down.

After I put the instrument panel back in the bike, I turned on the ignition and the mph hand sweeps the full breadth of the speedometer then settles back again on zero. Got some gear on (it's a little chilly here) and took the bike for a short 8 mile spin.

It seems that the stock speedometer from the H-D factory is *SLOW*. I think I was doing about three, *possibly* four, mph faster using this speedometer than the stock original. It moved smoothly, and the tripometer worked as expected. By the way, this speedo has two tripometers.

Overall, if you get the combination I got, expect to have things running again within 30 minutes, or if you're not very mechanical, less than an hour. It works as it should, and lights up so much nicer than the old stock speedo too (I can't wait to ride at night so I can see how nice it looks!).

I can't say anything about the 'durability' of this, as I've only had it on the bike one day. I expect it'll hold up as well as the original though, as it seems to be made as good as the original.

Hopefully this has helped anyone needing to 'quick fix' their speedometer. Me being poor as dirt, this was the best I could do for myself and it worked fantastic so far.

In the same boat with the LED not readable until warm and what started out as light ink leak on left had side, is now growing more to the right isntead.

I will need to so the speedo swap at some point , or at least pull it apart to replace the LED. The only thing holding me back on changing the speedo itself, and still trying to find a program to reflash the mileage in the replacement to the original speedo mileage, and unless I can find a program for that (maybe something like PonyProg), may still just pull it apart to do a lcd screen swap isntead. I already pulled the gas gauge on the bike to fix it, so pulling a speedo apart to fix it, not the end of the world.

Trust me , would love to swap to one of the new style ones with all the bells and whistles, but don't think that is doable. Hence old ECM don't hold the mileage, so would still need to use a program to get the mileage correct, and since the speedo's does not talk with the ecm either, not sure I could get one to work in the first place.

As for the new after market harness, verse the old hd67033-95D* when you could still get them, light year easy with after market wiring harness rework now, verse all the re-pinning you had to do with the HD replacements instead.

The only thing positive on the HD units, was it had the HD logo on them, and when you ordered them, they would flash them to the correct mileage before sending the out.
As for the after markets, am hearing that at least the LCD should last longer, but longevity wise, only a guess instead. Also, not sure if there is any difference on the speedo being offered by different vender, but do see that if you get the speedo with the new harnness as part of the package, ends up being cheaper than ordering each alone.

As for the HD units, they do pop up from time to time, but have had mileage already set in them, and not so sure that dealer could reset them, or ever allowed to, if a dealer still has then needed programming tool as the ad claims.

Glad it worked out, we have mixed results with buying repop parts from V-Twin. It's disappointing having to rework parts when they are new and not quite right.

My '98 Super Glide has a bad LCD too and FWIW Minitools now sells a replacement, I bought one but haven't got around to installing it yet.
The link below for the part also has a video showing the replacement process.

One way to find out if your Speedo is on or off is when your in Google maps and using the driving directions, if you look down in the lower left corner it will post your speed.. Quite accurate with the GPS function..

I bought a speedo upgrade kit from HD that converts the EVO speedo to a twin cam unit. I called corporate and they found me several to choose from, all sitting at dealerships. The one I got had 18k already programmed on it. I didn't care, I can do math if I take my shoes off. There was one at the time that had zero miles on it and the dealership wanted a fortune for it. I think I paid $250 for mine.

Not sure if this will help you and I know it's an old post

The Freewheeler is the only H-D I am aware that stores mileage in the ECM, the ECM is also in the Speedo. H-D Speedo are equipped with an IC and flash drive. At every shut-off, the mileages are saved. On start-up, the ECM uses a Databus cable to verify the speedometer is the speedometer it is married to, once verified, it notifies the TSSM/TSSM everything is correct.
An LCD swap is very simple. Reassemble can be really difficult. It has to be sealed. When you think it is sealed, that is when you start to seal it. Too much will break the glass though.
New H-D Speedo installs are simple and idiot proof. They come with a Speedometer Data Transfer Cable. One end of the cable attaches to the data port the other end attaches to the new speedo. Bike shutoff switch is on, turn ignition switch to ignition position. The new speedo flashes no cal briefly, then reads done. Turn ignition switch off. Unplug new speedo and cable, remove old speedo and install the new speedo. From that point, you will have mileage transferred and 30 miles of riding before the new speedo is married in the event you want to return it.
Hope this helps, I didn't read the entire post, I apologize if I repeated someone.

You can also download stand alone apps for speed (bigger display)

Just sent mine off to have the lcd replaced, if anyone wants to keep stock gauge you can check them out.

Mostly did it to see what the mileage really was on the bike I just bought. And it was in really good shape other than the lcd having some black spots covering almost all of the numbers. Will post some pictures when I get it back.

When it happens again, which hopefully won't be for years, I will go the new route. It was only slightly less costly than buying a new one + harness.

Just for clarity..
This is an older thread that returned.
The EVO era speedometers with LCD odometer are a hard wired unit.
The LCD leak of odometer is rather common for that time.
They are not like the newer speedometer units with a plug on back of speedometer.
The speedometers hold the mileage record.
You buy "0" miles and it will show "0"...You buy 30,000 miles and it will show 30,000.
A 1999 speedometer unit has a plug and can be used as a replacement with a wire adapter harness but mileage situation is the same.
The newer CAN bus bikes are different.
