I've read that the engine casing was bad on this year of harley. is this something I should be concern about? just bought this bike and as far as I know it is stock with 47k miles on it. I heard also that the casing is only a problem if you do some major mods to the engine. is this true? I just want a nice dependable ride to take wife on some longer vacation rides. I don't plan on doing any engine mods. thanks

I don't think you have to worry The only case problems that I know about was the left side somewhere from 1988 thru 1990 ? The steel timken bearing sleeve was always cast into the left case ( since ?) never a problem till say 1988 This is when some of the cases were porous enough to allow the engine oil to migrate into the primary HD would do a leak down type test (8 psig air pressure into the engine thru the timing hole/ soaping the exterior of the case around the timken sleeve to look for air bubbles etc ) This bike I would think has enough miles that it is not a problem

I rebuilt my engine (90 FLHTC) two years ago with S&S Cases. The problem had something to do with the oil lines being too close to the studs in the cases and when you tighten everything down, it creates a hairline crak in the case. They had a recall "back in the day" but the original owner never took it in.

I have an 87 flhtc that I had to get the case replaced, if you don't find motor oil leaking into your primary then you shouldnt worry about it. Also on a bike this old if I had oil seeping into the primary the first thing I would try is to change the seal first. Quite a few years ago there were places that tou could send the case to to get repaired but I'm not sure if these services are offered anymore.(if it aint broke don't worry)
