Marking it's territory

I know every evo owner has come to this. Primary gasket leakage! annoying as hell! Took my ride to the dealer, they changed it but it still leaked after that!!!!
The guy there told me it's hard to get rid of that, I mighas well get used to it "marking it's territory" but it's hard to put up with it when it's ur garage it's marking!

It leaks from the outer gasket and the inspection cover gasket it seems. Both had been replaced. The inspection gasket started leaking again some time ago... what gives??? I'm thinking of buying a set of gaskets again and installing them myself!
Any tips on the issue or good seals??

I have used this for years with great results on my 87 FLHTC. http://www.permatex.com/products/Aut...et_Sealant.htm The "guy" is full of it and sounds like he is feeding you a BS line to me. Are you using factory gaskets? Make sure the surfaces are clean apply the sealer and follow torque proceduers. I usually run a thin bead on both sides of the gasket and the inside of the cover. You can run a bead on the inspection cover also. Could your cover be flexed or warped? Has anyone used one of those biscuit gasket removers on a air tool on the primary side? A indy did that to my buddys and he had ahard time getting it to seal.

No. I've never had the primary gasket leak.

I have had the drive pully loosen and cause the trans oil to leak, giving the impression that the primary cover gasket (or cover) is fawked.

Have you considered the Cometic primary gasket kit? It's more expensive but you can reuse it several times.

Hmmmm. I've never had a primary cover gasket leak. I did have that newfangled derby cover gasket leak so I went back to the O-ring. Are you absolutely certain it's the primary cover gasket and not a seal? Maybe if some orangutan overtightened the screws it may have warped the cover but that gasket is fairly compliant.

I've even reused mine several times. I run ATF in the primary too, and that doesn't leak.

Shovels mark where they've been, mainly because of their rear chain oiler, but the only time my evo did was when the gearbox oil seal leaked. The replacements are superior and I haven't had any repeat problems and none with the primary itself. Best of luck sorting it.

This will solve all your problems, chad.

pardon my lack of proper names here, but the round cover (i think dirbi cover) on mine never leaks...

the square/oval chain inspection cover... leaks EVERY TIME! i have put in new gaskets several times, and thought maybe my cover was bent or something, bought a new one, and it still leaked....

i got a sheet of that "make your own gasket" stuff from autozone... and i used a real gasket from harley, and made another one myself to double up on the thickness.... that helped, and slowed down the leak, but it still leaks there some.

that's my experince...

I had a warped primary cover on my bike once, it leaked all the time. I bought another cover and gasket and hasn't had a problem since.

Mine stopped leaking when I made the sealer with permatex,I think I put some sealant on the threads of the screws, and it stoppeduntil I took it for a complete gasket change to the dealer...started leaking again (picture) and the other leakage didn't stop at all!!! (other picture)
My dealer sucks... I know, problem is... it's the only one here! that's why I wanna do the wrenching myself, hell, couldn't get any worse...

something else...oil seems to drip more after the engine is hot...
