so i seem to be sorted out now. I had pulled the lifters that were in the bike and swapped with some that the guy had in a box when I bought it....18523-86B is tbhe part # on the box.

I diked around with getting it zero lash by hand then 24 flats, and they wouldn't bleed. Then tried resetting and 36 flats...wouldn't bleed. Tried bottoming them out and coming back halfway, same thing. So pulled the lifter blocks and put the ones that were originally in it back in thier original lifter bores, and they bled. I don't know what make the originals are or anything but with the 18523's i could push easily into the seat of the lifter and these could hardly move the seat. ????

maybe I wrecked the 18523's by not bleeding em enough before I rotated the engine. Which led to bent pushrod #1 and subsequently bent exhaust valve on the rear. but I don't think they would bleed and being a virgin pushrod harley setter I knew no better. dam me.

anyhoo, had bought some edelbrock 88cc chamber heads from thier site cheap a while back so got them on now. btw these take a 88 twin cam 12 mm plug which can be confusing. 12mm plug...in diameter. had the tap set out and ready to go.

what's the deal with the lifters>

The instructions for adjusting the Screamin Eagle EZ install pushrods was pretty simple. Install them, back out the adjuster until there's zero clearance, which I took to mean until there's no play in the pushrod, then turn adjuster 2 1/2 turns counterclockwise. Tighten lock nut. Allow to bleed down for 10 minutes. After that, you should be able to spin the pushrod between your fingers. All adjusting done with the lifters at the bottom.

Used lifters with unknown mileage, not a good idea.

The rest of your post is too difficult to follow...

i know. no time and blither.

the harley lifters i was trying to use were very squishy. i can collapse the rod seat with just pushing with my finger. and they wouldn't bleed off. is that how they are supposed to be or did they get wrecked?

You will be able to collapse the lifter if there is no oil in it.

If there is oil in the lifter, you will not be able to collapse it with your finger.

When doing a pushrod adjustment you must be patient, some lifters take quite a while to bleed down.

I doubt that you did any damage to the lifter during pushrod adjustment, they are pretty beefy parts.
