Oil blow from crankcase breather

I recently rebuilt my engine on my 1994 FXSTS and now i am experiencing excessive oil coming from my crankcase breather. i have stretched the springs in my oil pump and still have the problem i was wandering if antone would has any ideas as to what would be causing the problem.

your oil tank may have to much oil in it ..... take a little bit out . You dipstick may read full , still take a little bit out

Sounds like oil breather, cam and pinion gears may not be aligned correctly.

Is it blowing at idle or on the road? Is it an aftermarket breather that you attached yourself? If it is positioned where air blows into the breather while riding it will not breathe and build up pressure and blow oil out when the pressure overcomes the outside force. Try repositioning the breather so wind pressure isn't against it while riding.

What was stated above plus are the umbrella valves sealing?? What kind of rings and how many miles on the rebuild?? How hard are you riding it?? Are you sure the rings are in right side up and gapped properly??

There is 200 miles on the rebuild. It is blowing at idle. I have not been riding hard following the break in period rules not overreving or let the engine chug. all the gaps are right and the rings are in properly.

the breather was on the bike when i bought it. i do not have breather heads on the bike. will try repositioning the breather.

Your bike should be a top breather. If your bike is a bottom breather, there is a piece of plastic that is a seperator that takes the oil out of the air going out of the breather. It goes in the tube that is in the gearcase below the breather gear. Is that in place???

WHere is this peice of plastic located do I need to Pull the cam cover to see it?

miacycles 03-08-2012 04:46 PM

Yes it is inside the cam cover, to the rear and slightly below the breather assembly. It is a round tube that goes horizantly through the case.

miacycles 03-09-2012 06:30 AM

It is mislabeled in the 1991/1992 1340 parts catalog part no. 99450-92 on page 18, one of two parts under item number 24. It is listed as "spring, oil screen, but the picture shows the air/oil seperator

Just wondering myneksred, did you find a cure? I have done the same on a 1986 evo to cure a burning oil problem, which appears to be sorted, but, the crank case breather is throwing out so much oil on idle that I could not use the bike.

Mine is only a crank breather, so no umbrella valves, bike has zero miles since re-build as only finished and started it to-day.

If miacycles sees this, would you have a pic of pipe and separator in cam housing as that is all I can think off, or is there something else I messed up on????

I did not notice this problem prior to work, even when it was using oil.

Thanks,

TC

Don't have a picture handy, the tube is in the cavity that is under and to the rear of the breather. Do you have the right cam cover gasket?? Yours should have one large opening, and one smaller one for the cavity explained above. If you put a late model cam cover gasket on an earlier one you will blow oil. The seperator is made of plastic, a little longer than an inch and has half circles alternating up and down so that the oil vapors hit them as the engine vents, slowing it down and seperating it. Hope this helps.

thanks Miacycles, found the gasket type on e-bay, so it makes your description a bit clearer.
I think I will pull oil pump ball and spring and clean filter screen first, then take it for a run. Maybe it is just sumping and it will clear itself out. I did only run it on and off for about 15 minutes in total.

As I said, it was not doing this before work and as I was not in the cam area this time I do not see why things would change.....

Thanks

Puking oil out of the crankcase breather hose at the filter of 79 shovelhead

I was trying to load my bike onto my trailer by myself and dropped the bike, I got it back up but the bike was almost upside down at one point, the bike won't start which I know is a different issue that I'm dealing with, bit when I'm turning the engine over to figure out why I'm not getting good spark it puking oil out of the crankcase breather hose at the filter, has anyone heard of maybe the ball in the oil pump coming unseated because of the bike being almost upside down and should I stretch the spring to try and get the ball to seat again? Any suggestions
