Default Slow to start when hot

Hi all,

I've been riding my 1998 FXD frequently recently due to the great weather and have noticed that if I go on a ride and shut the bike off afterwards when I try to start it soon afterwards before it has had a chance to cool. The bike is slow to start, it turns over fine but takes a few turns to fire up. Like it was flooded or something?

If I let the bike sit and cool, it fires up right away.

Any ideas?

check my post below about my evo classic,
everything is testing ok, I think the starter gets some heat soak but there is a step-by-step electrical diag if you feel it nessacery!

Thanks missed that!

I'm not certain it's an electrical issue, but having just said that...it's time to be certain so if nothing else, it can be eliminated.

I'm going to check it out this evening.

Mine use to be slow starting before I upgraded the electrical and charging system. Are you starting your bike with lites on or off? Also how did it start before they did a bunch of adjustments while getting it dynoed?

I'm not sure if I conveyed this correctly, the starter turns over the same speed. It just takes a few more revolutions before starting and when it does it chugs a bit. If I give the throttle a twist before trying to start it while hot, it's worse. Sometimes if I give it a little throttle just after it starts when I've had an issue it sometimes pops.

If the bike has had time to cool prior to restarting, it fires right up on the first revolution.

Hope that makes sense.

That does make scence, it sounds like its getting too much fuel (rich ) especially worse when your giving it a couple spuirts with the accel pump.

Sounds like a timing issue to me.

Looks like I found my problem(s)!

When I was diagnosing the charging system and removed the stator plug, the inside of one of the stator contacts ( engine side ) came off with the stator plug. So that was one issue, one that I was able to fix myself. Replacing the stator wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it might be.

The second issue and one that I attribute to my hot starting problem is the vacuum petcock, I just replaced it with a pingle and all seems to be good now. I believe that the vacuum diaphram wasn't working well enough to allow fuel to flow when the bike was hot and vacuum was lower. Time will tell.
