Carb conversion questions?
 

All,
I am slowly rounding up the parts I need, to convert my FLHRI (Road King), to carb. I am wodering; regarding the stock HD CV40 - do yoou have to use part # 27412-99D specifically (which is the HD part # listed on most of the conversion listed via the web)? Most of the 1990's vintage CV40 carbs on Ebay, are everything but the above HD part #. I assume any CV40 from the 1990's would work?
Also, using Deutch (sp) connectors - do you need any special tools to assemble these connectors? I have no prior experience with these connectors. I am getting ready to make my own carb ignition harness. All input is greatly appreciated!:)

99D is a Twinkie carb, the later model carb and intake will work as I was running both in the conversion, need to leave the map sensor in the intake or plug the hole. The Twinkie carb opens up the market of cheaper and usually in better shape items

Deutch connectors have a small lock that can be released with a pocket screwdriver, pry out the push in lock in the center of the connector body and you will see the terminal locks after it's removal. Be gentle on pushing the terminal locks over, they break easy when some age on the connector body.

All the conversion instructions are doing is listing the latest carby part number, any CV40 with an accelerator pump will do.

Thanks for that info on the 99D being a twin cam carb, as well as the input on the Deutch (sp) connectors. Spanners39, thanks again for helping out with my question! I had a feeling any 90's vintage CV40 would work, but just wanted to make sure.
Tee&Vee, I will take another look at Jasper86 build thread.
The reason why I am getting rid of the Morelli Magnetti efi, is due to it's inability to get along with performance upgrades - cam, exhaust... Plus I can troubleshoot and fix a carb problem on the road. Harder to do with EFI. Also; it's not working too good on my 97 right now. Hesitation while in roll-on during passing on the freeway.

For the benefit of other readers, I haven't had to 'fix' a carb by the roadside since my BSA Rocket 3 froze up one sub-zero Winter, back in the early 70s! Have never had to fix an EFI bike either. I've ridden half a million miles over 4 decades. We have a couple of recent threads about using an S&S module for tuning early EFI bikes.

Carb vs EFI, Synth vs Dyno, Which is the best carburettor, Wolf T shirt vs Dreamcatcher, Evo vs TC......we're a polarised bunch eh possums? ;-)

I don't think its about breaking down beside the road as much as the ability to tinker on a budget. I like to tinker without needing a dyno run or a laptop.....
