Ultima 131
Hello All, I've been lurking on this forum for some time now and I finally have something to post about I recently bought an Ultima 131 and I'd like to change a few things 1.Lifters 2.Rocker Arms 3.Push Rods 4.Carb And have the heads ported and polished! I'd like to run a D carb definitely, my concern is who's parts should I change the ultima parts out for? Thanks
Ultima rocker arms are a more aggressive ratio and will need to replace the cam unless you use the same ratio of rocker arms.
As far as replacement parts for a big cube engine, S&S comes to mind for performance and best chance of holding up. |
I can't give any advice on your question but I respect the general statement:
"I just bought a monster engine, now help me spend more money to make it go even faster" Good luck brother |

Thanks for the suggestions and i'll contact Scott @ Hillside and see what can be done to keep this Monster together Thanks
+1 on giving Scott a call....Also look at a tubo for it, as that may help bring it to life.

Isn't a Ultima 131 already full of power?
I have been in yr boat.mine is the 127 . I put in Jims tappet blocks redshift 656 cam re-used ultima / crane adj. pushrods. the johnson roller rockers are good but Jims are the bomb. I wouldnt reccomend the d carb unless you are just wide open drag racing. The D carb doesnt have an accelerator pump = shitty in town 2k-3k riding use a super G or a mikuni 48. throw the thunder start battery away if you orered one from Jireh. Get the "lightning start" 500 cca for that beat {ebay 113$ delivered) what frame are you using?
It's all going in a 98 roadglide, so Brad75raiders you say the Ultima pushrods are a keeper I'm going to follow those suggestions! As far as the starter I was gonna use the factory starter I've been told they'll crank this beast just fine. Now as far as cam choices I was thinking of using a Leinweber E9 and using his springs and changing out the Ultima coil and using a dyna 2000i and after all of this is done I might as well use the Mik 48 because I shouldn't notice the Hp/Tq loss from the switch from the D carb,by the brad75raiders how's your monster running any issues? Oh yeah Traildog it has owner but for my own comfort I'd like t change out the parts mentioned! Thanks everyone pls keep the suggestion coming
@ GraemeR I'm really aiming for a naturally aspirated Beast hey but if it's not enough which I'm sure it will be you never know Thanks
Super G with a Thunderjet
John of Miacycles is a long standing Ultima fan and expert who can offer suggestions on improving them, by replacing selected parts to improve reliability. I believe he has even built a 140, or there-abouts, that will fit a stock frame! Hopefully he'll call by soon.
John Sachs known as Sachs Race Engines in Florida is a Ultima specialist, puts out some crazy numbers with them by cleaning up the heads and knows that engines weakness on the parts side. On one of the other forums John cleaned up a Ultima 113" that dyno'd 139 in the real world and was in a light FXR. He also uses a reworked S&S with a Thunderjet and airbleeds.

Thanks i'll be in contact with those mentioned I appreciate all the suggestions, by the way those are some heck of numbers from a 113 where do you all think this 131 will land with headwork and the change of a few parts?
That 131 uses a 4 5/8th flywheel which creates torque over the standard 4 1/2 that is common with big cubes, you shouldn't have any problems with your eyes watering under acceleration, should touch low to mid 150 torque and hp on a dyno with some cleanup, exhaust and fuel system to feed it.
The only prob i had was a week battery grinding teeth off my flywheel. Now with the new battery no issues, John Sachs recommended the 656 redshift to me he said he made 130 ft tq with a 113, Just think what a 127 or 131 will do.....
Now that's some POWER I appreciate the input gentlemen I've contacted all three shops mentioned and I'm just waiting for there responses I'll definitely keep everyone in the loop of how this project unfolds, and by the way anymore suggestions are all welcome Thanks
If you end up going to a super d for max power or super G with a thunderjet I will buy that mikuni from you. I have another project that doesnt have a carb yet.
Hey brad75raiders my engine came with the Ultima R1 carb, but I would have been open to that Thanks
sweet so you have the ultimas version of the super G with pre fabed thunder jet mounts!
I suspect a D would be a lot of carb for a road bike. I know of a UK rider who highly tuned an S&S 124" and ran it with a G for the road and a D for the drag strip - when it delivered over 160HP - he wouldn't admit to just how much!
@brad75raiders yes I have the infamous R1 carb that will be coming off soon, I'm gonna slap a 48 Mikuni on there and see just how good it'll do.@ grbrown the D carb has been my choice from the beginning Because this will be a "Bar Hopper" and i really just want it to be a reliable one at that ill admit 160hp is a definitely admired, these heads will be sent to one of the best really soon I'm getting anxious I look at the motor everyday in the garage wondering how it's gOnna end up and what kind of power it will make
how much for the r1 carb? shipped to california?
I have the slightest idea I'm open to all offers, and I'm in Temecula Ca. So shipping fees will be minimal!
I looked long and hard at a hsr48...but since I already HAVE an S&S G, doesn't make much sense to buy ANOTHER carb.
that being said, my 124" monster is under warranty for 2 years....so any big plans are on hold for the time being. once the warranty is up, however, she's getting shipped to XXX Carbs down in Texas, going for the full TAZ build ('cept 1 thunder jet instead of 2....actually already have the thunder jet sitting in the toolbox) http://xxxcarburetors.com/tazmanianpage.html they sure are pretty |
@jasper86 that BlackMaxx Taz Carb sure is nice since I'll be powder coating the motor Gloss Black it will fit right in Thanks

Sure after I upgraded all of those parts and got the motor tuned it ran like a bat out of hell..... I didn't have any problems out of it I eventually sold the bike to a friend of a friend who to my knowledge still is having a blast on it! Mind you I put another 3k in the motor though I should've just bought the cylinders/pistons,heads,cases,flywheels from jireh but they never seem to have any of that in stock so instead of waiting I just bought the motor
Ok I appreciate the response. Did you replace the lifters, rods, and rocker arms because you had trouble with the ultima ones ?
