Compensator ans primary questions
 

Had a leaky primary gasket, when I drained I noticed a lot of metal shavings covering the plug and it's only about 150 miles since it was changed. Figured I should look a little more and popped off the clutch hub, comp and stator. Found a lot of shavings but I don't see anything except the compensator that looks worn. Is this thing shot? The rotor magnets had a lot of shavings as well. The spring pack if I spin or shake I can rotate them, unsure how to tell if they have the right tension. The teeth on the comp sprocket look significantly worn compared to the clutch teeth. Here's some pictures. Tell me what you think. I'm not getting any clunks just a 2000 rpm vibration.

. Do you mean the teeth for the starter gear? I see it, never even looked there was looking everywhere but there. It's chewed up a bit. Thanks for pointing that out, should I just slap it back together or try to do something with them

Looks like the starter wasn't engaging the ring gear properly......I think you found the source of your shavings.

Did it grind when you started it?

. Nope starts great. It's going back together. I don't think the shavings can do much harm in there I'll clean what I can and hope I got them all out.

That's where your metal came from...lot of life left in them...I would just clean up the rough edges with a file or dremal tool...and put it back together....then pay close attention to the starter, and see whats going on...haven't hit the starter with the motor running, have you?

You know, I did hit it for a second while I was checking the timing, I reached up from around the left side while kneeling and wasn't looking. Man what a wast of time, at least I know everything is in good shape except for that ring gear, I was able to get all the shavings out and off the magnets too.

Another question, got it all back together last night, just need to dump the oil in. I never checked the chain alignment as specified in the manual. It has one thick washer in there, no shims. Is this critical or can I let it be. I intended to and somehow overlooked it and realized this morning I missed that step. I assume it was checked at some point prior to me owning it. I really don't want to tear it down again unless it's necessary.

The alignment doesn't change, just use the shims that are in it.
