Straightshots popping after off throttle
Hey guys, I've looked at 10 different forums, ALL giving me different answers.. so I'm hoping I can get some from here. I've got an 09 sportster COMPLETELY STOCK, aside from the V&H straight shots I just installed. Well, after acceleration, when I let off the throttle, there is a decent amount of popping from the exhaust. My plan was to either go with Baffles or Cones. I do like the sound alot but I'm more concerned about the loss of power. Am I better off choosing the torque cones over the baffles? Or maybe both? I don't mind the sound changing a little bit, but I just really want to get rid of the 'popping' sound without sacrificing a loss of power. (I know the real answer is to get a REAL exhaust , like a fancy 2-1, however, I picked up the exhaust for $80 from a buddy who never used them ( wrecked before he could install ) what's a good set of baffles OR cones I can pick up to help with my problem? Thanks in advanced!

V&H baffles either standard or quiet will eliminate the popping. The quiet baffles really aren't that quiet, they just take the "harshness" out of the tone and provide some more back pressure.
The least expensive way to go is the DKCustoms Thunder Torque inserts. These are a modified "lollypop" design that are very effective at reducing the decel pop while allowing full and proper exhaust flow. I have them in my Big Shots Longs. They offer a nice idle, relatively quiet cruise and and big bark when you twist the wrist. About $25.

Did you retune the bike after installing the exhaust?
You have EFI, right? In all honesty, it was probably running a little lean from the factory, and while the stock control unit will probably adjust okay for the exhaust, adding a tune will help.
But, yes, popping on decel usually indicates a lean condition.

After I added my Arlen Ness Big Sucker stage II, and the Vance and Hines FP3,
No more decel pop.
If you look into the end of the Straight Shots, they have a cylindrical baffle.
Most mufflers have an hour glass baffle.
With the Straight Shots being so open, there is lots of hot air that is mixing with Un burnt fuel causing the fuel to ignite and thus pop pop pop. So by tuning and enrichment of fuel, there will be too much fuel and not enough hot air so your actually flooding the exhaust eliminating the decel pop.

This.
I put them on my XL1200X without doing anything else, and they popped a lot. I liked it at first, but after 6 months, it got old. When I took the bike in for its 1000 mile service, I had them install a Stage 1 A/C kit, and then dyno it after they used the SE Pro Super Tuner on it. No more decel pop.
