Default Arlen Ness Magnaflow Fail

Finishing the second season with this pipe on the old lady’s bike. She has a 2012 Dyna Street Bob, stage 1 with thundermax. She loved the look of the pipe and because I run a 2-1 it made sense for her to pull the trigger on this pipe. The summer before this one we were coming back from Sturgis to Canada when we pulled up to the border we both heard an audible exhaust note change and the bike started popping on decel and running like ****. We got home and I found the 10mm bung fell out of the stock placement. Easy fix and mybad. This summer we went on a couple rides and you could hear decel popping like crazy everywhere we went. I checked for an exhaust leak and couldn’t feel anything, enabled the decel Fuel cut on the tmax and checked to see if we were leaking on the intake side. Today I put her bike on the lift cause she was saying she loves her bike but the popping is unbearable and maybe she should sell it. I started with uninstalling the thundermax on my laptop and reloading software, taking her air cleaner off, reloading a fresh updated map #853 and this time I didn’t pull the exhaust but made sure the nuts weren’t loose. As soon as it fired I felt a big leak at the front header. I shut the bike off and pulled the exhaust. I actually didn’t notice anything out of place until I layed the pipe down and looked for a hole or something to make that huge leak. As I examined the pipe the beveled end of the pipe came off in my hand. In fact you can’t even see where there was even a weld holding it on? I had a fatcat, RSD, Vance and Hines and now a cmp all 2-1 and never seen anything like a cap on the end of the tubing that can fall off like this magnaflow pipe. So the front header pipe cap is off and the rear is loose. I don’t think welding it is the answer or it will change the seat of the c clip and exhaust flange. Has anyone else had this issue and how did you fix it?

if you want to save that pipe I'd have it tig welded in a few spots an see if that works. might be able to tig it on the inside so the flange clip isn't interfered with, just clean it up so it doesn't interrupt exhaust flow.

It happens often on V&H pipes. At the shop we re-weld them (inside) and have not had one fail a second time...

We drilled a hole through the top and bottom of the flange and welded the hole. They are tight now but may not solve the sealing issue as Hotrodjohn pointed out. I’ll report back.

Reinstalled pipes today and same exhaust leak on the front head. I’m done with these garbage pipes, buyer beware.

Sorry to hear of all your issues with the Magnaflow pipes. IIRC they catered to the auto industry and made a decent set of pipes but they haven't been long into Harley exhausts. Dumping them is probably the best thing at this point... I do know that if your still looking for a 2-2 for her the Pythons are still a good quality pipe.... Good luck man....

Had the same thing happen with my pro pipe. I contacted VH about that problem. Even tho I bought the pro pipe used they sent me a new head pipe at no cost. I’d call magnaflo and see about them sending you a new head pipe
