I just purchased an 2016 Iron 883 and had Vance & Hines Shortshots put on. The dealership tuned the bike before I took it home. I am hearing a lot of decel popping and am wondering if this is hard on the exhaust/engine? Does it need auto tuned again?

 

It won't hurt the motor. Short pipes are not easy to tune, so depending on what kind of tuner you have it may take some time to dial it in. Which could be a very long time or never, based on how good the person tuning it is.

 

I have the Screamin' Eagle Pro Street Tuner. I won't worry about tuning it since it won't hurt the engine. Thanks.

 

Donut gaskets could not be seated right or exhaust may not be tight also.

 

I love decel popping. I have no idea why the harley world seems to think it's the plague.

 

I don't mind the decel popping. I just have heard arguments on both sides that it can damage the engine.

 

There is 100% no way it can harm your engine assuming it's not from an exhaust leak or improper header / gasket fit.

Some engines you can turn this on and off depending on your preference.

 

Pops are symptoms of a less than ideal tune.

Small clusters of light pops on light to moderate decel are often symptoms of running lean. How lean and in how many areas of your tune is hard to say without sampling some data. It can often be easy to fix but certain exhausts are more prone than others. I wouldnt be happy with a bike running lean. Air cooled engines run plenty hot even with a healthy fuel supply. Harmful to an engine?

Singular large pops after heavy throttle to no throttle suggest a rich tune, at least temporarily which is often limited to only certain parts of the tune and the acceleration enrichment table

The TTS user manual explains these things well and the tuning corrections that usually fix.
You don't need a TTS to read this. All flash tuning modules change the same tables of the Delphi ecu. TTS just went to the trouble of writing a really good manual.
