Default Andrews 37h cams and a TC96 Stage 1?

I am looking at replacing my stock TC96 cams with a set of Andrews 37h cams this winter. My goal is to get a decent torque / hp gain without any major engine mods like a big bore, head work, etc. I can get a set of the cams for less than $300 and do the work myself...

My TC96b currently has a set of V&H Big Radius, PCIII, and a SE air kit with and K&N air filter. The bike runs pretty nice now, but I am looking for a little more without a lot of expense and engine work. By the way, its an 07 FXSTC.

Anyone got any comments on what I can expect from this mod? Just adding these 37h cams... and I don't want to go with the gear drive cams, just stay with my roller chain setup.

Better yet, has anyone out there have my exact setup with the 37h cams? If so, any good, noticable results? Is it worth a few hundred bucks and my time?

Go out an buy the new copy of Ironworks mag it has a great article about race tuning your street Harley by a retired factory and race mechanic... opened my eyes, since my knowlege is limited. The guy talks about the important mods and the real things that will give you the biggest bang for the buck. Has a great disussion on buying a cam for more torque and rideablility and not buying the biggest lift and such... He does not however suggest any brands or types.

The Andrews 37 is a decent cam. and should work great with your bike.
I have an 05 dyna with a 95 in. and the cams I have are just alittle larger but they pull like a banshee!
Check out Head-Quarters.com for cams and components that make big torque!
They made a beliver out of me!

Thanks for the info. I just dont want to get to radical with my cams but yet get a decent performace bump over stock and not have to bore to a larger size and change up other stuff..

I agree, dont get radical cams, but I recomend buying cams that are of a dual pattern design, that offers you the broadest power band from off idle to 5500 rpm!

If you buy some cams with an intake duration+ or - 240 degreesyou will be fine.

Well, Head-Quarters cams for example, have a dual pattern design. My cams have .575 lift on the intake cam and .530 lift on the exhaust. and the intake duration is 240 degress and 256 on the exhaust.
There are other things involved as well, like when the intake valve closes after bottom dead center.
and the duration, theses two factors will contribute to how the engine will Idle and when the power comes in. In addition the different exhaust lift and timming can work in your favor to help a bike that has unported heads flow better for better power in the mid and upper rpm ranges.

Typicaly the latter the cam closeses the lower the crancking compresion, and in most cases the engines dont come "on cam" until around 3000 rpm and later. these cams require added compresion to work properly. The earlier the closing builds compersion and makes better torque off idle and for a large torque curve, like the Andrews 37.
a cam with larger duration has more time to let in air, and the higher lift a cam has will let even volumein for big torque. but you can only do so much before you have to balance other parts of the engine.

Be aware that the exhaust system on your bike may hurt low speedtorque as well, and needs to be kept in consideration if you power expectations are not met.

I dont want to confuse you in any way. I have run 5 different grinds in my bike and liked the HQ cams the best, but the Andrews 37 made some great torque in my 88 in "phase" i found this cam alittle small in a 95 in. the S&S .570 cam fit that, but thetorque was peaky on my build, the HQ cams have broad power and come on just like stockers and pull to 6K rpm!

The Head-Quarters TC 500 has longer exhaust duration on the exhaust and would help your stock heads breathe better than the Andrews cams.but it has added cost.

i have a few questions for you mentor. how much compression are you running? what heads? did you have to flycut your pistons for the .570 lift?

The 37 works well on the 95", I had the hi comp version (31) and was very pleased.
On the new stroker 96,you might want to consider the new mid lift cams. GMR recently switched form using 37 to the new R&R 525 ( .525 lift vs .510) Andrews just introduced the 54 which is a .550 lift and should be better for the stroker motor, lift like the SE 255 but longer duration. Both the 525 and 54 have similar behavior to the venerable 37 with a bit more across the band.
