Slow Idle...Not with EFI

Slow Idle...Not with EFI
Hi All,
My silly question for today...
One of the things I like about the older bikes with carbs is the slow lumpy idle, that sounds as though its about to stall.
I'm told (by other riders) that EFI wont do a slow idle, needs to be at least 1000rpm
Can anyone explain (in simple words) why ? (and how slow my 07 FXDC can idle)
No big deal...I dont spend that long idling, but would be nice to know
Thanks
Jay

RE: Slow Idle...Not with EFI
I haven't tried but with a SERT I see no reason why the idle could not be set lower.
It would however be a bad idea as oil flow from the pump at tickover is exactly earth shattering when ticking over at the recc'd speed.
I guess what I'm saying is I believe it can be done but I wouldn't do it.
Older bikes were designed to tick over lower, so if thats what your after theres your answer.

Am running a ThunderMax with Auto-tune, on my 07 Fatboy- ( was running a SERT & did not want to be a slave to dyno tunes -retunes etc ..... in order to get the bike to run right and true ) With the Tmax, I was able to set the idle down to 940 rpm; Pete at Zippers said no harm to run the idle there and it does give more of the potato-potato sound.

G'day jaybee,
Although this has been covered a lot, and we all agree that you wont get "potatoes" with EFI ..... and dispite the people that worry about oil pressure and voltage etc.etc. (blah blah). I set my T/Max to 880rpm and that was as close as I've ever heard to the potatoes. The TMax is in blocks of 16 rpm, so i tried 864 (sounded like 880), then 848 (sounded a little sick), then 825 (sounded very good but nearly stalled a few times)....so 880 it is.! No probs in 7000 miles and as you said, "you don't idle for long" . Also you can reduce the high cold idle rpm (slightly) and get to hot idle speed sooner, which avoids a fast idle at the first few sets of lights. I have owned an carbed EVO before and I can tell you that no T.C. (even withOUT efi ), is ever going to sound THAT good. That's life in the 21st century.... hence i plan the buy an EVO fat boy in the near future.
