Default adj. pushrod ???

I just did my 1st 95" build Sat. even put 150 mi. on her. I think I hear a little more noise in the push rod area?? If I was to go back in to adj. my push rods could I just get it to TDC on either piston loosen up the p-rods get them to 0 lash then extend 2 1/2 turns then lock em up?? Then do the next barrel. I guess my ? is will the lifters pump-up to , or back to where they belong before the original adjustment. I would hate for the lifter to stay 2 1/2 turns down then me put 2 1/2 more turns on top of that. 5 turns= no-no. It sounds great at idle just a little more noise than I remember at speed?? maybe It's just me being nervous?? The bike does run great though.. 95" w/ s/s 510g cams.. thanks Steve

Piston to TDC, let her sit for an hour to blead down those lifters, then you can do the adjustments. Repeat for other piston.

But, maybe the pushrod tube is rubbing?

I used the S/E p-rod kit so i think I'm O.K. w/ the tubes (I'll check). It's probably(?) nothing just my ears playing noise games w/ me!! It's easy to adj. em. so maybe I'll go do it after dinner. I guess I could get each cylinder to TDC remove the p-rods wait an hour then adj. each cylinders p-rods..Trying to save a little time. It sounds great at idle, just want it to be perfect. Probably nothing though?? Steve

Depends...What was the build you did? Did you go geardive? The S/E pushrods rub at the top of the tube usually if thats the problem. a rocker bo alighnment might fix that if its the problem.

We always subscribe to Bob Woods, .140-.150 into the lifter regardless of TPI on the pushrods.
Works for us.

Scott,

I just heard that on another thread, that Bob really recommends going way down the lifter bore as an adjustment. I have always subscribed to setting the pre-load at about 1/2 of the lifter plunger travel, which is usually somewhere around .100, give or take. Is this something Bob recommends just for lifters with his cams due to the fast ramps?

Not trying to highjack the thread but might get some help on this. I just rebuilt my evo with a W-6 cam, jim's lifters and comp fast times pushrods. i set the pushrods at three turns as comp said but she taps pretty good more after it warm up i pulled the plugs and and didn't see the valves hitten anything i'm going to try settin at 2 and a half (just saw thats what jims whants them at) but how do you set at .100 or .150 not sure what your measuring on.

To set pre-load at a certain measurement, you need to know the thread ptich of your pushrods.

Example, 40 threads per inch and you want to set the pre-load at .100.

One full turn = .025" (1" divided by 40=.025" per full turn)so to get .100 preload is four full turns once all free play is eliminated.

HD quick install pushrods are 24 threads per inch (1' divided by 24 = .0416 per full turn) means a .100 preload is approximately 2-1/2 turns

H/D was the safe way to go..Guess my bike knows the better oil and let me know..Runs great, black Fat Cat on the way..Thanks to Shooter64 but even more thanks to Sara..you rock Steve
