Head-quarters Mikuni tuning kit. re-visit
a coulpe of months ago I posted here stating that the HQ Mikini tuning kit was a bunk item.
Now im here today to eat crow and tell everybody using the Mikuni that they will be better offWITH this product that just using and tuning the out of the box carb!
in a performancebuild application the bikes tend to use a little less fuel, butwas only the midrange on my bike.
with the out of the box Mikini the bike never ran right, kinda too fat in the 1K to 2600K range, the torque was great but the bike did not feel crisp.
after talking with HQ and another gent on this forum I reformed my thoughts and stratigy on tuning my bike and I put the HQ emultion tube back in, I used no other parts from the HQ kit however.
My issue was that on a hot day over 80 my bike would ping in a narrow but crittical area in the 2500 to 3K range.
I learned that with the HQ parts the bike ran cleaner, crisper, but the ping got worse. I was seriously thinking of redoing the timming maps in the DTT ignition that Doug did for me. the funny thing was that Doug stated I could run this timming with an engine over 10.5 to 1.
Somthing had to be wrong on my end! I put the Out of the box needle jet on the botton clip where I always had the least amount of pinging and then started running larger main jets until the pinging went away.
Last night I found the sweet spot and man it was nice!
so now I have a bike that idles nice and is very crips on the thottle crackin it at idle, and runing at lower speeds, milage is 46 mph + and at half thottle hold on for dear life!

RE: Head-quarters Mikuni tuning kit. re-visit
mentor, what jets did you end up with? I am having the same issue with severe pinging after i installed the HQ emulsion tube. So you are saying that you have your needle clipped in the lowest position so as to raise the stock needle higher? I have the high compression HQ 95 with the 600 lift cam and mikuni 42 and fatcat 2-1.

and Yes to the clip on the lowest setting so the main comes in the quickest.
