Default adjusting velva touch lifters for evo

I have Velva Touch lifters with regular Crane adjustable pushrods on my EVO. I'd like to know the lifter adjustment technique for this combo. I'm trying to decide between slowly bleeding them down till they bottom out, then shorten the rod 1.5 turns (9 flats) or to shorten the rod till it's barely snug with the lifter and then lengthen the rod by 4 full turns (28 flats, I believe, for the thread pitch on Crane rods). I believe the second method is correct for my lifters that have been in use for at least 10 years.

Would anyone have any idea? I have the bike on the stand ready to adjust them.

Thanks alot,
Rich
